Re: Ping batteries still the same price !

The cost of battery storage for 8,300 KWH would be huge. How many kwh of batteries would you need for this ? Why would you need to store a full years worth of electricity? The storage is just a buffer to keep you going when your demand is greater than your generation. So how much buffer do you real...

Re: Ping batteries still the same price !

My old 3.5 year old ping is still going strong, granted he doesn't really run it down to lvc and it still gives him around 19ah from a 20ah pack, that's pretty good value in the long run I suppose. Perhaps LiFeP04 would make great renewable energy storage, but the costs would have to come way down a...

Ping batteries still the same price !

Has anyone looked at ping's site lately ? I would have expected the cost to have dropped a good bit since I bought mine 3.5 years ago ?

I would have thought the price of batteries in general would have fallen a lot over the few years but they haven't.

Re: Would you agree to have a windturbine in your neighborho

I got to say that I don't like them, I liked the idea in the beginning but now that I've seen them in action they are hideous looking and a pure scourge on the landscape. They are pretty noisy and especially when they change direction. Now I know city folk are used to noise but country folk have a r...

Re: LA 2013: VW Announces 256 MPG plug-in Diesel Hybrid

Here's a review on whatcar.co.uk of actual users of the VW Polo 1.2 TDI 75 (80 ?) hp 3 cylinder diesel. Note, these are all imperial mpg figures. "This is a car built for a purpose - fuel efficiency. This is what it does well. Commuting I am getting 70mpg, however on a longer run, I achieved 79MPG o...

Re: Hydrogen fuel cell range extender EBIKE

I feel hydrogen might find more use in commercial vehicles, If lithium air batteries come on line in the next 5-10 years then I'd see no advantage for hydrogen. I'm assuming the recharge time would be much less.

Re: Questions for Toyota Prius owners.

Sorry, misread the question. I don't know: I don't usually drive the car, and my housemate usually uses up all or most of EV mode range by driving in EV in cities. No problem. I think, judging by the cost of the Prius Plug in in the U.K that the Leaf is a far cheaper option and better because it ru...

Re: Hydrogen fuel cell range extender EBIKE

It's only 100 watts though. Not really practical for high power use. My Bosch 400 wh can take me 70 miles even with pretty good climbs, sure enough it provides full power until 15.5 mph then starts ramping down until it reaches 17 mph where there is no assistance, and I like to pedal a lot too. Gran...

Re: RC Lipo series charging tutorial

i built up a 24S lipo pack using 40C HK 6S packs using a 24S D131 Bestechpower BMS and got it to balance initially under the BMS. it only needs a 100.8V bulk alloy charger to charge and i have both LVC and short circuit protection. That setup looks good, but to be honest the triangle on my old bike...

Thing is though, fuel cells, wear, out just like batteries.

Hydrogen is horribly inefficient to produce and that energy is much better put into batteries.m

Hey Nep, great write up, I remember all the help you gave me just before I decided to take the lipo route. I was glad I did because. I had wicked fun that lifeP04 couldn't have given me back then, or probably now. I didn't blow up anything or burn the house down and I was never tempted to keep an Li...

I thought 13-15 miles is what you got in EV mode ? I mean what do you get in regular hybrid with engine and ev ?

There is a plug in version you know ? it's got about 4.4 kwh lithium battery. Um, that's what I've been talking about. We are leasing one - the "Base" model. HAHA I just re-read a few posts back ! So how far on average do you get in regular hybrid mode before the battery runs out ? 4.4 kw...

There is a plug in version you know ? it's got about 4.4 kwh lithium battery. It's actually a fair bit more expensive than the Leaf over here, actually it can only be got from the U.K atm they don't sell it here. Even the regular prius is a lot more expensive than the Leaf, making me think I'd not b...

Re: LA 2013: VW Announces 256 MPG plug-in Diesel Hybrid

Decent city car then again why bother with a diesel. They could have a 0.9L turbo petrol. For a much more refined engine. In fact why bother with any ice at all if it's a city car ?!!! OR ..better still , why not make it a CNG or at least a LPG engine to keep the emissions even lower. CNG is replac...

Re: LA 2013: VW Announces 256 MPG plug-in Diesel Hybrid

Yes I remember the PD Diesels, great engines but noisy as hell. But it would take around 10 miles to blow hot air. AFAIk most of the newer VW's have some kind of electric heater, the Audi's have had them for years. I remember my old 2003 A4 had an electric heater and made a huge difference to warm u...

Same boat here. It's either an EV or it just feels like stumbling around on a dinosaur. Driving gas cars feels more like punishment than pleasure. While I agree a 50 mile Leaf might be enough for a lot of people it is on the low side... Range must get to at least a real 200 miles at 60-70 mph, along with fast recharge times. Most people care about the times when the ev will not reach the destination a couple of times a year, this is a major c...

With a cool/temperate climate, a LEAF pack is going to age very well. From what I've heard, the LEAFs with substantial range loss live in parking lots with surface temps >120f most of the time. Re: Chevy Spark EV

Yes there is promising battery tech promised, but when it's actually in a car with a real 200 miles range then I'll get excited. There is also the matter of recharge, unless you can recharge a real 150-250 miles in a maximum of 10 mins there will still be vast amounts of people that won't buy them ...
