I have been speaking to Rob of Quantya bikes, he advised of this company/bike - I'm amazed at how it operates although some of you guys I know have developed CVT geared bikes and so on...

at a Guess I think its a smallish ( size ) maybe a rc motor ? ( dont tell BA ) motor driving a clutch through a 2 or three speed box maybe a 2 speed and maybe the shifting is done by reversing the motor.. of course this is all guess work or wishfull thinking and its very similar to what I have been working on

That does look good, i have always stated on this forum
electric motorcycles will not compete well against ICE
in many forms of racing they simply don't have the battery capacity for it at this time....that is, with exception to SuperMotard i think the bikes could very well go head to head with their ICE counterparts in short heat races...

It is a small motor (maybe 5kW) with a 6 speed gearbox.

They say that they save battery by operating in the "high efficiency" range of the motor more often, and that is sort of the case, but I imagine the benefit of the gearbox on the efficiency is rather minimal, and in the end having the gearbox allows you to use more power, so the gearbox ends up having a negative impact on range (but large increase in perceived power the bike has)

By having a gearbox, they can have a small motor give you good acceleration at low speed, and allow you to put down the maximum power (say 5kW) at much lower speeds. lets say with the gearbox it allows you to pull 5kW at 10kph, then you shift and are able to put down 5kW at 20, then 30, then 40, then 50, then 60kph, so pretty much from 10kph up to 60kph when you open the throttle you can put down between 2.5 and 5kW of power. If you had a single gear, you could only draw the 5kW at the rated RPM / speed - at 60kph. At 10kph with a fixed gear you could only deliver 0.8kW, which is obviously much less power than the gearboxed bike could deliver (provided you can actually keep the front wheel on the ground with 5kW at 10kph). The fixed gear would feel much more "wimpy" because of the power limitation at low speed, but would end up saving you battery because of that wimpy-ness. With a 5kW motor and a gearbox you could have much more fun. Many people who ride a single speed electric motorbike for the first time wish it had a gearbox, even when the bike has a much more powerful motor (like the Agni or Perm132) that the one in the video. I think they are taking a step in the right direction if you want a small motor, but still want it to feel powerful off the line.

Totally agree, dirt bikes need gears even if its only two speed low and high range...

and top of the tank? Lota space there it seems?!

There IMO is a big advantage using an established lightweight motorcyle thats had hundreds of thoiusands
of dollars put into designing and testing by large a motorcycle manufacturers, definately a
bonus on scratch built bikes by small companies with limited R&D budgets for testing...
...You would be confident about the bikes frame, suspension brakes and overal handling

IMO its a slick looking conversion would go as far as saying the best i have seen to date (on a motocross bike)

looks like they just adapted straight onto the stock ICE tranny. even kept the clutch (which would be handy for some technicle stuff)

I have a couple boxes of salvage 85cr 125's stuffs....just need to lace me up some 17"ers for the motard look...would be a good project for that shelved Mars motor. I think a 3-4 speed with optomised ratios would fit the power delivery curve a bit better. But It is cool to look at & I really want to ride it!

I bet an older perimeter framed KX250 would make an excellent donor for a build like this & could be had for cheap.
that video is awsome, & i really see that as the future of amature racing. Indoor for winter fun for some of us,ellectric stops the nasty air quality issues....my only questio is....where is the dirt section & jumps? that is motard racing. A smaller scaled road race specific bikes would really be a hoot on an indoor Kart track.

Hey KiM - I'm completely on board with that. I think alot of people get tied up essentially trying to re-invent the wheel to a degree - You can pick up some pretty cool, sound performing rolling chassis that will do the job all day long.

When I picked my pitbike up, I thought anything I do here has to be modular - I want a bolt-on kit that can be just as easily taken off and replaced with 'X' or even a gas engine whenever I want.

and I know - as you say - its up to the test!

This is all true, but for those of us who have spent months trying to modify an ICE frame to suit an electric motor will surely know the feeling of defeat when things just don't quite line up. If only Mr Honda would let me make a few small changes to his chassis...

Everything would line up just fine if we had a 2 speed planetary geared hub motor. A motorcycle has the width to do it properly with proper gears without too much weight gain at the wheel if you can go electric with the rear braking. We just need that lightbulb to go off for someone at one of the major manufacturers working on emotos.

There was rumbblins that this idea have been taken up by one of the big manufactures of trials bikes and is still being developed. I have been keeping a eye out for a gasgas or a sherco rolling chassis for ages ( they dont come up very often at a good price ( cheap ) )and yes I would love to try it. I did manage to get a Gasgas frame a while back just to see if everything would fit nice, and It would , from what I have seen/experienced with using these out runner motors that only 2 gears will be needed for a trials bike to make it very competitive and will also give it enough low down grunt to ride it at anything i.e the same as the gas versions.

in the height of having the electric-bike buzz and wanting to make everything electric...... there was a guy local to me selling 2 rolling gas-gas bikes, one fully built running no problems and the other that had an engine in bits.

They sold on ebay for absolutely nothing, I should have bought them - I even had a friend that would have bought the second one off me/split the tab... kicking myself now...

For a trials only bike, I'm thinking they're still better off keeping a clutch for feel. that way you can keep the outrunning spinning a bit so as not to be so nasty on the controller right away too.
