Cycle Analyst and the Zero Motorcycle

Postby Doctorbass » Fri Jun 15, 2012 11:04 pm

I just installed successfully the C-A v3.0 on my new Zero DS 2011 and it's AMAZING on how usefull it is !!

The cycle analyst IS one of the best gauge you can install.... at least for 150$ it display alot of great info

Here is the data i collected form the ride i made tonight!  A beautifull ride in Quebec city with the perfect warm weather.

Type of road: (50% on highway )

Distance: 44.9km
Energy consumed: 2609.9Wh
Wh/km: 56.1
max amp peak: 558.3A
V min: 45.3
Average speed: 49km/h
Running time 57.02min
Capacity consumed: 50.1Ah
V after the ride: 49.7V
V at begining of the ride 58.1V( full charged  and balanced)
Max speed: 108km/h
Power at that speed: 9kW
The average current draw i saw was oscillating between 50 and 80A
My weight 155 pounds
My tall: 5"9

Next ride i'll connect the GPSdatalogger option on it so i'll datalog all these data and their associated electrical parameters.

Hey Doc, thanks for the info.
Can you show us some pics of the CA on your bike - where you put the wires and the shunt?
I want to do the same on my Zero MX.

Re: Cycle Analyst and the Zero Motorcycle

Now Installed

I connected the Shunt right between the battery negative and the controller negative ( in serie with)

I sense the voltage on the DC-Dc 58V input on the top of the motorcycle. I sense the speed on 3 of the the two wires that goes to the optical sensor on the motor pulley. ( the blue flashing light you can see on the side of the motorcycle)

There is 3 wires on that optical tach sensor:
-white (signal)
-white/blue ( Gnd)
-white/orange ( 5V)

I connected the speed signal input of the C-A ( yellow wire) to the white wire of the optical sensor and the gnd of the C-A to the White/Blue wire

The pulse on the signal wire are around 3V from the gnd so it pulsate between 0 and 3V and the Cycle Analyst can easy detect them.

Here is few adds-on i installed:

- 50A charging connector
- RS232 cable acces for programming the Alltrax controller
-A 12V 20A anderson plug for accessory

The acces for programming the alltrax controller require to dissassemble the bottom plate on the frame of the zero and remove a plastic cover on the controller wich require some time.
I can not just connect my laptop to the plus without dissassembling any parts on the motorcycle

The 50A anderson connector is wired with 6 gauge welding wire, that can easy take 75A continuous with the anderson contact for charging in an hour

Nice work dbass :D

Just one question - wouldn't it be better having a current transformer threaded down the huge battery wire?

Like this.

Might be harder to calibrate, but cheaper and not as prone to corrosion as some metals.

Well These current transformer work only on AC current not DC.. If you want the DC version they use a hall sensor tupe circuit but they are know to have some hysterisis and to be less accurate. At least that's what Justin said.

Doc, bit of topic.

But does your Zero has EIG batteries or its just the 2012 one?
Looks like you are enjoying the e-moto alot.
A decent 25mph bike will cost around $1000.
A decent 35mph bike will cost around $2000.
A $1000 35mph bike will get you killed.
Justin we really appreciate what you did!

Very nice Doc!

I have a new CA and a new crimper tool with some lugs sitting in my garage. Now you leave me no excuse not to install!

I do have to say I've been enjoying the bike. I've put 3000 miles on it since March and I'm a little afraid to take it apart for some down time.

the most impressive is that, at 58.1volts it can reached 108km/h, and it draws a current 56.1Wh/ km.
a powerful z motor,

kent
Conhis hub motor run on April 2010, 48v 1000watts hub motor distance run 5800km, and Re~alive cyclone kit bought in year 2009, Bought a greentime controller 18fets- 4110 , 48v~ 90v , 3-speed mode. Latest top speed I got for my greentime controller 76.8km/h ! , yet to reach 80km/h, or I will never reached 80km/h ?
