Zero motorcycle Battery balance

Postby Doctorbass » Sun Jun 17, 2012 1:18 pm

Once i got my new Zero 2011 i immediatly began to personalize it as i want.

The battery health is something i consider inportant and i decided to add some balance port to it that will allow me to charge individually each of the 14 cell string independently at up to 30A or to just monitor it with my celllog 8 hand held 1 to 32s display.

Few picture of the battery inside and the added wires and anderson connectors:

I added the orange wires on the cells tap that connect to the Anderson 15 pins balance port.
That's two orange 16 gauge wire per positive of each cell group that join a 12 AWG silicon wire and then to the anderson 30A connector. just enough for up to 20A balancing current

I thought the chemstry from the 2011 and older Zero bikes was a self balancing type kinda like lead????
Thanks Justin of http://www.ebikes.ca/
Also a thanks to Methy at http://www.methtek.com/ :)
And Dave who has some good deals on STUF
RC lipo and most other types of Lithium batteries you MUST know your individual cell voltages while charging and discharging.
Batteries of all kinds need respect they can burn your house down, so don't sleep with them under your bed or any other were you cant afford smoke or fire!

Thanks for the real world info on those, better energy density than M1's and 10c rating, WITH self balancing and safety to boot.
Sound good to me! Any idea where to get some of them?

I saw inside.. it,s many pouches.. not cylindrical cells.. and there is a well designed PCB that connect to the cells.

Thanks for posting this Doc. Big props for your courage taking the battery apart!

Is this picture showing the voltage fully charged, or could the cells get closer to 4.2 if you let the battery on the charger longer?
(Sorry for off topic) What voltage would you choose for storage if you're not riding the bike for 3-4 weeks?

It's the 95% charge i think, usually 100% allow the batt to go (58.8V full or 4.2V full)

for 3-4 week storage best is 100% charge right at the begining of the storage since at the end of the 4 weeks the bms would have drained a part of the capacity...

cells prefer 50% SOC for long life but with a BMS that drain a part of teh energy, it is always better to fully charge it.
