If you calculate, you will see that for 398usd you get a 48V (16s) 9.2Ah (4p)

That you can charge in 15 minutes!!

Just think about it.. a 485Wh pack for around 500$ including a BMS ( around 75$) + 25$ external parts

A123 are the only one that you can charge in 15 minutes!

28v dewalt packs seem to be on sale again (toolking has them for 49.99 with free shipping). Also, packs of 4 for $195 with free shipping are showing up on ebay (with the listing saying more than 10 available) so if anyone was holding off on getting some cheap A123 cells, now is your chance. If you combine it with bing cashback (currently 8%), cells are getting pretty cheap. See ebay listing 110435625911 or search for DC9280 on ebay.

Bought 10. Just arrived today. Was too excited, and managed to cut myself with the knife opening the box!
Packs marked 2007. Opened one up. All cells at 3.3V within a millivolt.

FYI for Canadians: Shipping of 10 was USD60, then customs added $50 more (5% GST and 7% duty since toolking had filled in China as country of origin -- I though A123 was US, but packs indeed say made in china)

Interesting. Keep us posted on how these packs treat you over time. Sitting @ near nominal for ~3 yrs... wonder what that'll do to a cell? In theory I suspect with these A123s it won't be much of an issue. I'm kinda hoping the price stays low for a couple weeks until I get my next paycheck.

Somewhere I read that the cells are designed to be able to set for 15 years (charged to 50%) without damage. If true, that is amazing. Most of the cells (tool packs) I have are dated 2007 and cycle all within 2% of each other. Small rises in temperature can add some capacity. Maybe we should all add some heating to our packs (even in summer) ?

Was thinking about kfong's uber-cool boards, but these are quite a bit cheaper and I can use some the lights in my VW bus restoration project... swivel lights for reading etc. Why not.

I can confirm the "404" code for free shipping. If you get to the end of checkout and already specified shipping (ground), click on the shopping cart to go back and enter the code. Also, if you order $99 or more, standard ground shipping is free.

I don't know how much longer this deal will last. In the past, it is usually only 3 or 4 days and then goes back to $49.99 so hop on it if you want to get in on this price.

I decided to get 8 of kfong's interface boards. 1 complete one as a template, and 7 bare boards to practice my soldering I think I read somewhere that there was some sort of issue with using the floodlights...maybe something about them drawing less than 28v, or the interface has a limitation that needs to be overcome. However, I ordered the floodlights to test that theory out. I figure they will come in handy for fishing/camping and general emergency situations since I will have plenty of 28v batteries now

Interesting. I was just planning on using the direct +/- spades in the flashlight housing and gutting the rest and letting the pack BMS cutoff at it's normal voltage etc. If there is some sort of circuitry in the flashlight I'll gut that also, but you're making me realize that I should go buy just one locally to make sure before I order a bunch. Maybe lyen will chime in with his experiences with his 36v flashlight build. Going with a 2s4p so if the 25A max on the 28v is true as per kfongs experiments that's 100A sustained... I won't go over 40-50A sustained during my commute, but I've seen bursts up to 100A-ish so that was my target peak. I already have visions of how I'm going to mount these all to my old hardtail frame.

Oh... forgot to mention that the 8 V28s I just ordered will also power my VW bus at night so I can watch movies, listen to music, stay warm with electric heat etc. Going to go 4s2p in the bus.. 'bout 106v.. and just run that DC straight into a power strip and trust all the various "wallwarts" to step-down as they need. We'll see how that works. Ha!

8 packs arrived this morning. 7 @ 26.3v and 1 @ 26.2v. I'm totally cool with those resting voltages. Got 8 DC9000 chargers on the way for super cheap.. love ebay (sometimes). "1hr" charging until those start not working and then at least I have backups. When everything stops charging I sell the chargers, bust open the packs and buy a BMS for it and keep using the cells for (hopefully) several years at least. Haha.
