Nope doesn't matter (polarity - its just a coil of wire).
You gone and shorted rectified mains to earth. Oops. Test the base drive resistors, they end up as fuses on these as well. If your transistor isn't shorted (would have taken out the fuse as well) then you may have wrecked more semiconductor havoc in the bridge rectifier, or turned something else into a fuse
