Procedure for XT 4mm Gold Connector w/ Protector

Hello

in regard to the HXT 4mm Gold Connector w/ Protector

would someone know the correct procedure for connecting the connectors into the protectors?

Eg: do you slide the protectors up the wire prior to soldering the connectors then slide them over the connector after soldering the connector or do you leave the protectors off the wire, solder the wire onto the connector, then push the protectors onto the connectors ?

How do you tell which (male/female) connector goes on which protector?
