Retro-Direct gearing systems

What?????? does that have the freewheel on the left side???? Looks like and Escher drawing!!

edit: Ahhh! Two freewheels and they are reversed? Is it like the BMX bikes with the reversable wheels?????
I need a drink!

Ah! eureka! Your the motor that reverses! Thats wierd, but good for electric conversion for 2 speed gears. I dont pedal backwards, thank U!

Ya know, if U put a third freewheel on the pedals, the motor could ron in 2 gears at different times for max efficiency, and U would be set up to pedal forward for one of those situations to help the motor, maybe the lower one for hills to reduce amp draw! obviously U would only have one effective gear, and freewheel when the motor is reversed! Howzat!

Yes, that would work. But, maybe pedalling backwards isn't as awkward as it seems...?

This system isn't ideal for combined gearing, though...

I envisaged it as a separate drive on the LH side for the motor only. Maybe you could even have an automatic gear change, triggered by a wheel rpm sensor (with generous hysteresis)?

Perhaps the ideal case for the implementation of the retro-direct idea would be a 2 speed geared hub motor 8)

with two opposing freewheels can you stop peddling? Or does it behave like a fixed gear bike in each direction?

It freewheels.

Regeneration wouldn't be possible with a retro-direct system.

I like the simplicity of changing gear by reversing drive direction, that's why I thought we could explore the idea to see if we could come up with a practical implementation, for our needs.

Also (I think I'm right, here) you can't "back-drive" it, so it would be difficult to isolate the motor when you wanted to used pedal-power only.

Just use a freewheel at the drive connection to the wheel.

Brainstorm!!! Oogah! What about a Shlumpf(sp?) drive type situation on the bottom bracket that reversed the pedaling to forward when U kicked it in! You could then have multi gears on those freewheels, and not have to pedal backwards! Just a passing thought in a clouded brain! U still would need a bottom bracket freewheel.

No gears in the BB drive except forward and reverse! Hey! I said it was a brainstorm, not necessarily a GOOD idea! :)
