Hi guys. I work in a bicycle shop these days where I build and sell e-bikes and also am trying to juggle college in between. I have a customer who wants to install a hub motor on his recumbent with a 16" front wheel. We deal primarily with e-bike kits but they do not have a 16" wheel hub motor available. Can anyone suggest a source for a 16 inch wheel hub motor kit? Thanks

You can get a 16" wheel with any of their kits, but a word of warning: There's two 16" sizes. I measured these at 317mm. Bromptons, Mezzos and some other bikes use 349mm, so there must be two tyre sizes as well.

I'd probably just lace a regular hub motor into the wheel, but you can buy 16" kits even on ebay. Search for 16" hub motor. In such a small wheel I'd think you'd want a fast wind motor.

A few years ago JohnRobHolmes (forum Member) laced a Bafang in a nice dual wall 16" rim for me. It is currently in use on a friend's BOB trailer. I actually chose a slow RPM motor for hill climbing purposes. The choice of a fast wind or slow wind depends on the speed and use the motor is being set up for.

I built a twin 16" wheel (305) bike and used the cutie 100 type motor. I laced the drive wheel 1 cross. I choose the cutie 100 type motor because of lightweight, small in size(especially on a 16" 305 wheel. Max speed in the neigborhood of 20mph, good enough for me.

Thanks again...you guys have amazing rides. Long live the Sphere. It is a invaluable tool. I wouldn't be where I am today without it.
