Long time lurker first time poster, I don’t usually post on forums however I decided I would this time with the aim to assist/share my personal experience for those who are considering some form of e-bike.
A bit about myself. When considering significant purchases I always look for a balance between, price, performance and reliability. I like to refer to this as bang for buck.
The ebike will be primarily used for commuting (minimum 40kms). Concurrently, I would also like to be able to take it offroad/bush bashing from time to time.
I noticed the stealth ebike which is made in Melbourne where I live. Then I noticed the price ~$10k AUD !! and not even a mid drive and began to investigate if I can build something with similar or better performance for less mulla($).
The next consideration I faced was whether I would want a mid drive or hub drive ebike. I wont explain my reasoning in great detail here, as I am sure there are forums and forums debating which is better or worse. In the end I decided a mid drive unit would be best for my purposes. The deciding factors for me was that mid drive units have more torque and greater uphill pulling power. Finally (and this is only my assumption) I believe the mid drive unit would not compromise bike handling given its positioning on the bike vs a hub motor.

The main thing I wanted is something quiet and reliable which I noticed is a big issue for mid drives, hence why in the end I gravitating to the AFT kit as that's one of their main selling points. The new C3000w kit from cyclone took my interest initially but i read a lot about all the problems of the standard cyclone kit -so I chose the AFT upgraded version of this same kit. I also looked at the bafang BBSHD but that seemed too low powered at 1.6kw peak, I also looked at the Tangent 3-6kw kit but negatives where that was more expensive landed here and also from the videos I have seen that is way too loud to ride on the bike paths and single track that I ride on here.

So I settled on the new 72v AFT 5kw as it seems to have the best of everything, high power, reliable and also quiet .. so it will be interesting to see how this pans out as reliability is very important for me as I ride 2-300 km a week I set myself a limit between ~4-5K AUD for this build and after significant time investigating I pulled the trigger on this :

- AFT mid drive kit 5kw kit -Battery specs 72v 17.5 ah 18650 ga cells from ballarat ebikes .
-hardtail 29er Trek , hydraulic disc
-Cycle Analyst v3

I am currently in the final steps of the build process now, so far everything has gone together well - just need to finish battery and wiring install. I will provide another update once my bike is finished, and share any positive/negative experiences I have come across with the whole setup and the battery.

Welcome to the forum. Spot on the reasoning for mid drive, at least in theory  , or rather you are right but dd hubs might not be all that of an anchor it has gotten the reputation for. Look forward to see your build come about. Don''t know much about the chosen motor and the sound/noise, but I know aft got some nice add-ons, like cooling fins and oil iirc.

I was more then a little impressed by a recent youtube vid of a stealth bike doing 20+meters jump over and over and seemed to take the punishment rather well. There are also a few stealths/vector/qulbix video's of hub motor builds that are doing rather well on steep hills and single tracks.

With the new method of cooling hubs with ferrofluid and a large outside heatsink overheating hub motors is not that big of an issue as it used to be. It is not all about the specs, or weight distribution, or centralized mass, even hub motor'd bikes can be playful. See videos below.

Yes mid drives have way better handling case closed and this guy sounds like he might be able to use it.

Yes you are right FT, mid drive is better for best handling. I didn't argue that but I was not getting the point across. Lost in translation or something. I was trying to show that even much lower priced hub motors can be a lot of fun even for the type of riding OP is aiming for. And not to forget the silence of a hub motor. Reason for that was his bang for buck, and I know how easy it is to surpass the budget :D

Some update photos, all fit up well on this 73mm BB bike. Battery done, Still last thing to do is program the CAv3 and then first test ride coming soon

Wow very nice clean setup first one of these AFT builds i have seen on here?? where did you get that bashguard from looks really neat ?

This will be interesting to go running this much power through the gears. interesting to know how this pans out... these cyclone 3000w are supposed be really quiet so interested to see any video updates on this. also interested to know how it goes at 72v and 5kw as i think most people around here then them under 3kw peaks ?

Sweet dude! I'm in Melbourne too and just finishing my BBSHD setup on my On-One 4565b. If you want to go for a ride and see how the kits compare (leave mine in the dust no doubt!) hit me up :)

We need video comparison of the sounds of the BBSHD and Cyclone if you do, please! If you could use the same camera and do fly bys with camera stationary as well as camera on board while riding, that would be awesome.

Bike absolutely a gem to own and ride.

I will be uploading a vid shortly for those that are interested. Stay tuned

Bike has been going very well done 6000 km now and kit has held up well, just had to change the gearbox gears now to the new carbon fibre and at the same time I am going all out with the full ceramic grease-less bearings so I can’t wait to see how much better it will go. The AFT kit seems to be the only one designed to do lots of Km’s . Most of the other ones I see people have lots of failures on the high power mid dives or changing chainring’s at only 500 miles lol for me mileage and reliability is the most important thing as I do lots of Km’s hence why I chose the AFT kit as that’s what they specialise in

I think this is an interesting kit, and I really like that (it seems) you can pull the engine and gearbox off without messing around with the BB and cranks. I found a quick look at the pricing and available options very confusing.. Anyway, have you taken it off-road much?

Welcome Very nice, clean build.
I built an AFT bike a few years ago, once I had it all in place and properly adjusted it’s never let me down. I did run into some problems in the beginning with frame slip where I bent the whole structure but that was truly my own fault. I replaced the main structure and had some custom mounts machined for my frame and never looked back
I’ve ridden mine super hard since then, high drops to flat, up and down large stair sets & even mud bog runs without so much as an adjustment or any other maintainance apart from cleaning it well & adding the oil as directed.
Your gonna love it!!

Great to see an AFT build. Seems AFT is delivering the upgrades needed for longevity, high power and reliable performance for a cyclone motor.

I remember reading this thread about the C3000w being the ultimate mid drive choice of some dude after he tested out 15 other ones including the tangent , BBSHD, mini cyclone etc = https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=83578

So this is AFT is the C3000w on steroids ultimate mid drive ? I.e Tangent 3220 power without the noise i.e quietness of a BBSHD and reliable unlike the stock cyclone ?

Eager to see some more photos and videos dude !
