it's 2am now and i just comeback from my first ride

ok ok.. well.. that's only the second ebike i try in my life, BUT!... i have to admit i'm pretty impressed by this MONSTER!

I received the hub motor and 35A72V controller at 6pm from ebike.ca.
I worked 2-3hour in my shop to install it and build a temporary battery pack from a couple of SLA that one of my friend gave me(old UPS battery from his job computer shop)

My first tests was done with 3x 12V 5Ah sla to get 36V.. well, it was not bad for acceleration but it suffer a bit of top speed (33km/h)max on drainbrain v2.

My second test was at 72V .. .. it's like comparing apples and bananas!! day and night.. etc... 72V waked up my 5305!!!!, the monster sleeping inside!...
i had no time to install them on my bike so i decided to fix all of those on a piece of wood and to put those in my school bag linked with a 50A Anderson connector.

The accelerations are VERY impressive!.. i dont know what feeling is actually with a 408 or 5304 or 03 BUT a 05 is very very agressive!
when i twisted the throttle, i just couldn't believe it!

Peak power of 2390W, 42A and 47km/h top speed all that with couple of 5A/h old sla of 30 month life used.

Just by checking spec of those i seen that they can give 650w during 2 minutes in the A/h/time/volt charge grid.

Now, i just go to the bed and will have a good night, satisfied of my first e-bike!

Yes, must have pictures. Rain is no excuse, it merely reduces the coefficient of friction and prevents rubber burning.

Rubber burning.. i agree, i experienced that in my garage yesterday.. but about the rain...???

A rainy day contain more humidity.. and should be more dense.. so how could it reduce coefficient of friction?

Is it about laminar or turbulent mode of air?.... the lower pressure in the atmosphere ?(less air molecule (like 99 or 98kPa when rainy day occur)?

Glad to hear you got it running anyway. I'm very interested in your results since I am considering that motor for one of my projects. I don't need to go over 30mph, but I need serious hill climbing torque.

Well, i just comback from my third test.

I have no serious hill to climb near my house, that test will be sonn, but not today.

I tryied again my top speed on flat and i got 56.9kph!

and 62kph when i goes down from a low slope hill.

At some moment, that was pretty dangerous, because my bike have no rear suspension and the 30lbs of SLA battery + the 25lbs hum motor make my rear tire bouncing very easyly it is the only one to absorb the holeof the road and I would like to try another place for the battery, like puting those in the triangle....

My 6 battery have around 140wh of energy before reaching 63V that is the secure low discharge limit (10.5V per battery). i burned all that energy in 6km only, because i put my throttle to 100% all the time of my ride.

Finally i tried to climb a long and low-medium slope hill at 2km from my house and got 39kph at 1300W .. far from my 2390W yersterday!


now my first six pack SLA battery pack is chargng again for 14h at 1.5A 85V.

I have 14 more battery left and charged.. i will built a new pack and ride again and try to test the range i can get at 25kph.

I goes in the setup menu of my DB v2 and programed teh max speed to 25, the max A/h to 5 (like the nominal capacity of the battery, and will post results tonight.

I'll be interested in how it climbs, great I would expect.

I did my first ride up to the new property today with the 406.

14 km round trip, used 5.75 Ah in total.

5.25 up, .5Ah down.

About the same total as from home to town from my current location, go figure

So I think the 5304 should work out well for me.

It's amazing how much faster a full-on aggressive riding style burns the fuel in practice compared to an amp-conscious style.

Being careful not to ever run it down too low again, my 2,500 watt-hour pack lasts about 45 minutes of full-on, 30-40mph hill-blasting, 35-amp riding. Because it's so darn exciting, that 45 minutes is psychologically compressed down to an apparent 15 minutes.
Pulling 5 amps to cruise along at 20 mph, limiting current to 12 amps to maintain that speed up ~5% hills and soft-starting with max 20 amps, I get very respectful and also fun performance that lasts for...well...I don't know exactly because I've never come close to running the pack down that way, but something around 5 hours that seems like 5 hours.

hmm, by me 5 hours on a bike is long for a long time tho... I'd take the bus! or dial it up several notches so it spends out faster.

I agree, my fastest run toke about 8min... and 124Wh.. maybe it's because of the peuker effect that decrease efficiency of battery at high current....

That's my situation too, , in my case it's the pretty high acceleration that addicted me to doing it again and again


My fifth run was at midmight and I tryed the road to my work, at this hour, no trafic, less stop.. etc.

I limited the current at 5A and speed to 25kph. It took 25Wh for 3.67km and around 8min of driving time. The DB indicated 11Wh/km. I was pretty satisfyed regarding my pack that can give me 120Wh at 30A.. I just wonder how Wh it could do at 5A.

I admit that it was a bit too low at 5A for 25kph, the DB always enter into current limiting and i keept 19kph averaged speed.

Generally, I observed that it's a fact that running at low current limit increase the range by 3x or 4x!

Those small SLA's hate getting discharged fast like that. You only get about half thier "rated capacity". Damn Peukert. Start looking for those free DeWalt batteries.

Sounds like you have enough batteries around to make an extra pack.
If you can figure out a way to make them quick-release, you could be charging one pack while you're discharging the other one.

The 42A was not just a spike. I got it at my first full throttle acceleration with full charged 72Vsla pack. my DB was set to 50A current limit, probably Zev or Justin from ebike.ca forgot to set it to 35A....
I use 10gauge wire , maybe it help a bit. my bike is 90pound +me 145=235pounds! the current is at his max!..

Maybe is i decrease the caps inside the controller to avoid sopft start effect, i could get higher acceleration.. but it's enough for me now and i dont want to blow the controller!

»I have 20 sla battery and I tested each one about discharge slope. Using Excel, a wattmeter/volt/ammeter and a chronometer, and discharged those using a small 12V 10A car heater.. the mean of time is around 16min to drop from full charge to the 10.5V limit. each pack have around 20Wh. I kept the best of those to make 2 good 6pack.

Now i can charge one and use the other... the swap isn't difficult, but what is is difficult is to remove them from the bag to charge them.. i dont have choice, i need to cool down them when i charge them.. heat is bab for sla charging... so I use a fan to maintain a warm temp. I charge them at 1.5A for the starting cycle of charge(5h) and then drop it to .5 when reaching 15V and keep itr to 2 hour to equalise them, and for the rest i finish the charge cycle to14.4V for another 5hour. that's what battery university website from Cadex recommand.
