I just got the motor turning over on my bike and the speedo reads almost the same exact speed that the 5303 would do free spinning 51 MPH. I was expecting a much lower speed due to the simulator saying that at 48v Lipo I would see 24mph. Perhaps just letting the motor spin up without any load has absolutely no bearing on actual speed. *shrug* Just thought it was weird to see such a high speed...

Almost done soldering up the connections. I couldn't really get bigger wires for my phase. I just ended up finding wire of similar stock and just ran double phase wires. Really not planning on much more than 2kW so that will do. I then added roughly 50mL of Mineral Oil to the motor. Mostly to just keep the moisture from hurting the motor from all the rain I get here. The cooling is a bonus. :)

Came in the mail yesterday. Originally a ebikes.ca motor sold to Methods then oatnet bought it from him then I bought it from oatnet. :D

9C 8x8 in a 26" rim. Filled with ~50mL of mineral oil

Oh the good stuff!

Equals the new and improved this.

Controller is painted black and uses the lowest bottle holder bolt on the bottom and sits upward at a angle. I like the angle as I also filled my 6fet with mineral oil.

Next step is to bump the controller to 40amp battery and 90 phase amps with my 12s2p Lipo battery. Run with that for a while. I don't expect any real heat from a 12s setup. Using the ebikes.ca/simulator using 48V seems only draws <700watts at full throttle. Planning 18s at 25battery amps for starters and just work my way up to 35a. Not a very powerful setup compared to others here but will get me past 2kW and more than quick to get me to school. :-)

On a side note a great thanks to the ES members that helped me out today when I hooked up the motor and I made a opps in the assembly of the motor and it was running backways. Swapped 2 hall wires and found the phase setup that worked. I am going to get my hands on a meter to test how my freespin amps are at with the mineral oil inside it soon enough.

Did I mention how much lighter the 9C is compared to the 5303. Holy sh!t lifting a 30lb dead weight and then the 5303 the 5303 is still heavier. That's just the 5303 in a 26" rim without tire and tube. Instant love for the 9c due to the weight savings alone. Super happy with the switch to the lighter motor.

A impulse buy off Amazon, a cheap ($24) triangle bag a Sunlite Epic tour XL. With that bag in mind I started taking my 12s2p square brick of a battery and made it into a flat rectangle. Luckily when I soldered it I left just enough wire to let me simply lay flat without any mods to the battery.

Image

Using a roll of 4" 3M Scotchrap All weather corrosion tape. Stuff is 10Mil thick. In this picture I used normal electric tape and a #2 exacto knife for size comparison.
Image

Adding 2 large circuit boards to both sides of the battery for strength and used some thick foam on the bottom I wrapped the battery in 3 layers of the tape. Looks real sharp not covered in duct tape. :)

The new 12s2p battery fits perfect in the bag. Very happy with this impulse buy of the bag working out so far.

I want very badly to make the jump to 18s to bring the 8x8 motor to life but I feel it'll be good for my waistline if I keep the motor to ~24mph where I can easily pedal with my 52/14 gearing.

It's late for me 3:41am and I need some sleep so I don't somehow screw up attaching a velco bag to my bike. I can't thank everyone that has helped this motor swap happen as quickly as it did with fast responses from forum members and a huge thanks go to Lyen who sold me the little 6fet controller that has worked flawlessly and continues to answer all my questions.

Thanks ES

Ensuring the battery sits snug in the back the front triangle now holds battery, throttle, and ebrake wire. Now off to get some groceries on the bike I'm starving. Bumped Lyen 6fet controller to 40amp battery and 90amp phase. I can bump it higher as I have no more worries about picking front tire off ground when I finish a turn and throttle it. :-)

Good day to you!

I'm I correct in saying that you have taken the xt60 connectors off and replaced them with bullets?
May I ask why? I was thinking of starting to use the xt60 connectors.

Thank you!

I haven't taken them off yet. Just found it unnecessary to have bullets already come with the battery from Hobbyking with 10ga wire so why convert the bullets to xt60 to connect to my wattsup meter when I just just keep the bullets. Nothing against the xt60 plugs. I find the xt60 plugs awesome to solder to, take a lot of heat without having the small bullets inside melting the plastic. Are diffficult to disconnect by accident and clearly labeled +/- when u solder unlike the ultra deans plugs I used to use.

Seems hobbyking.com has them on backorder but I recommend getting something like at least 3 sets of the 5pair packs so a total of 15 male and 15 female connectors. It's amazing how quickly the connectors get used up so it's better to have extra than wanting when it comes to getting the bike together. 8)

I did a little test of my new setup. Not sure of how else to strain my electrical system so set the controller to 40 battery amps at 12s Lipo and 60v regen and just left it on full throttle and pressed my brake regen button for 3 seconds and let full throttle kick back on for 3-5secs then back to regen. Did this for a full mile keeping around 15mph as ebikes.CA simulator showed that's where I peak power for this motor. Roughly 5mins of this and the controller had barely started to warm up(being full of oil no surprise) motor was a nice hand warmer temp. Very happy with how the small amout of oil I put in motor now pulls the heat away from coils and right to the aluminum casing.
Now I'm confident that after that and barely being warm I can step up to 45battery amps easy and test that. :) the little 6fet is proving to be very strong when oil filled. I'll stop increasing power at 50amps just to keep my battery from going any higher than 5c discharge.

Could not be happier with bike now I finally have batteries in triangle. :)

Used a total of 2 on each side, 10-24 3/4" bolts tapped through both docs torque arms and the alum drop outs.

I did this as I noticed my other torque arm had fallen off as well. Decided enough was enough and put some bolts in and reapplied the epoxy. I'm confident I won't have any more problems with the torque arms. :)

Soldered up a 10AH battery from 2 spare 6s 5Ah packs then used a 2-liter soda bottle as shrink wrap. haha I know it sounds crazy but it works. Just realize that the soda bottles require a strong heat gun and should just fit around what your shrink wrapping before you use the heat gun. The best part is the plastic is super tough and ensures a very tight compression fit.

Just dug up this simple idea from a old forum. Pretty straight forward can use any plastic bottle really but I'd recommend using 2-liter or 1-liter bottle as are nice smooth cylinders. 8)

So close to having my bike setup with 72V10Ah....

72V10Ah battery hooked up to a 6fet Lyen controller (filled with mineral oil) powering a 9c 8x8 DD (a small amount of mineral oil) with settings of 40A battery 100A phase.
 Now I'm still a small time ebiker in comparison to the 10kW+ builds going on here but this bike is a daily commuter to college that's 7.6 miles away.

Bike is awesome now with batteries in triangle like everyone recommends and I'll only go as high as 50A batt. 125 phase if I'm craving some real quick acceleration to the local market. :)

Seems I found the limit of a Lyen 6fet controller. Using a 20s10Ah battery and the controller set to 60amps 150phase under hard acceleration it just cuts out and works immediately after again as long as I be careful on the throttle. With 18s set to 60/150 I wasn't having any problems. So unmodified the controller seems to meet its limit at around 4.5kW. This is overheatingas it happens cold to touch. The 9c 8x8 seems to feel great at 20s :). Shame I need a stronger controller to approach the 100v mark.
