General Discussion about electric bicycles.

Any comments on Tektro versus Hygia? They also have hall effect (solid state) e-switches in some of their e-brakes, and can be ordered with digital or analog hall sensors.

edit - fixed typo

Did you mean Hygia?
http://www.hygia.com.tw/prod-brake01-6.htm

This version for a trike with twin calipers off the one lever and an optional park brake and hall sensor looks interesting but didn't find any retailers. Who sells them?

I have tried the Tektro ebrake hydraulics & they're not bad. More of a recreational product then performance/racer.

My preference if ebrakes are wanted is the Magura pressure sensor which can be run in-line with any hydraulic brake:

http://www.ebike-easy.com/products/Bicycle-Parts/BionX-Press-Switch-for-Magura-brakes.html

That way you retain the ebrake functionality but are not tied to a specific brake set.

[edit] just fyi, Magura brakes use mineral oil, so best to use the pressure switch with a mineral oil type hydraulic brake.

sorry, missed that before. http://www.hygia.com.tw/liveshop/index.php?route=product/product&path=49_65&product_id=135

Hygia uses DOT 4 brake fluid while the Tektro uses mineral oil. Not sure what the significance is of that though with respect to braking function.
Hygia ues Shimano XT/XTR pads while Tektro Auriga uses same pad as Deore mechanical. You'd need to check which one has the larger pad surface area.

The twin calipers are nice for the dual disc front brakes such as the forks from Accountant that I got with my Greyborg kit.

Other vendors have dual calipers such as Gatorbrake.

DOT brake fluid is very hard on things like paint.

A pressure switch like the Magura requires some braking before it actuates, the sensors on the levers can be set to actuate before any braking occurs which is nice for regen first sequencing.

Hygia caliper looks to have the larger brake pad (Shimano XTR is wider/longer than Deore mechanical one used in Tektro caliper.

I actually consider them a "fake" part....... the hydro one i had seal was blown after 2 days, the mech disk caliper counlnt even stop the bike lol . I wish the best of luck with yours but im sticking to avid, hayes, magura, i know theres others..... juicy fives my fave right now....

Shimano also comes on Walmart bikes and they have the best components money can buy so this isn't always the case. I would agree that Tektro sucks (although that's what I use on my race bike) but it seems they are trying to break into the ebike scene with decent components so I'd be willing to bet cost was not the only consideration when they built these brakes. Brakes are brakes IMHO, of course some "feel" better and have better modulation of power but it mostly comes down to the pad and whether you want long lasting or stop on a dime power.

Reading the reviews on the MTB forum the Hygia gets the thumbs up.

I agree that pads can make a world of difference and is propably part of the reason people are put off by Tektro. The stock OEM pads that come with the Tektro Aquila (mechanical disc) are crap, one set only lasted 220km. Switched over to the Ashima SOS multi compound pads sinter/organic/sinter and they last 3 times longer and give better feel at the lever.

I'm just about to go out and try my new Juicy 3 hydraulic front with G2cs 185mm rotor :)
I put this wheel together last night and installed the hydraulic system.

Before/After pics....

How do you like the Juicy 3's. I've read thru bike forums and people cut down
all sorts of products......can't make heads or tails out of any of it :(

A friend of mine works in a bicycle shop as head mechanic. I got these for a good
friend PRICE but I said to him that I don't want them if they are not good. He had
nothing bad to say about the Avid Juicy 3. :) I trust a guy when he's got over
100,000 dollars worth of personal bikes in his basement..... lol

I just got some tektro ecomp from illa. Again great service! I will do a review once I calibrate everything. So far they are working as advertised.

It seems there are a couple of Tektro hydraulic disc brakes for e-bikes being used now:

1./ Tektro Auriga e-sub, was used on early Bionx http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TEKTRO-AURGIA-E-SUB-F-FRONT-HYDRAULIC-DISC-BRAKE-ELECTRIC-BICYCLE-BIONX-NEW-/150740784320?pt=Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2318d9d4c0 and was (and may still be) also an option on some eZee models
This e-sub has a smaller s20.11 pad (squarer) compared to the e-Comp. http://www.tektro-usa.com/category.php?catid=187&productid=1125 and http://www.tektro.com/_english/01_products/01_prodetail.php?pid=148&sortname=Disc&sort=1&fid=1

2./ Tektro Auriga e-Comp, is now being used on bikes like the Ohm http://ohmcycles.com/electric-bike-special-edition/ and available as an upgrade from places like http://ebikessf.com/tektro-ecomp
This e-Comp uses the larger E10.11 pad that is the same size as used in the Tektro Aquilla and Shimano Deore mechanical calipers. http://www.discobrakes.com/?s=0&t=0&c=16&p=483& and http://www.tektro.com/_english/01_products/01_prodetail.php?pid=132&sortname=Disc&sort=1&fid=1

I just scored 2 sets of the Tektro Auriga e-subs from eBay for $65 each + combined shipping of $18.99 from CANADA to US. They are listed at $69.99 + ~$14 shipping, but I used the 'Make Offer' button to combine shipping and get a discount on the pair.

$148.99 for 2 sets to my door is great. It's even cheaper than the AVID BB7's (160mm) that are being replaced. Can't complain when I can get hydraulics with ebrake capability cheaper than my mechanical setup.

Delivered today.

No box, just a plastic bag with cardboard in between the 2 sets. Seemed a bit weird, but apparently sufficient. The hydraulic cables are quite short (18" or so), but are also sufficient for my front wheel setups (going on 2 different bikes; these on front with BB7s on back).

They look nice in all black and the disc (160mm) looks quality. Haven't installed them, but squeezing them in hand feels great. I can tell the modulation will be smooth as far as the friction brakes go. Won't know about the regen/ebike cut functionality for a month or two.

I haven't used them yet  ... My 2 projects that they will go on are just rounding the corner of completion. But from playing with them off the bike, I can say that modulation is VERY smooth in comparison to my BB7s

I think the guy (dragon_spinz) just sold his last pair since I cannot find them anymore. Bummer, as they were a good deal for e-brakes hydraulics.

You just need to scan eBay every 2-3 days to find if anything comes up. I also lucked out on 2 pairs of Tektro Auriga Comps (non electric) for the rear for $70 shipped ($25 ea + $20 shipping) which I will convert using a reed switch and magnet.

Good luck on the search...
