The Korean manufacturer Mando will be presenting its Footloose drive system at Eurobike, which is perhaps an even more visionary technology. This system features an important detail that might not be noticeable even at second glance: there is no visible means of transmitting power between the bottom bracket and the rear wheel, such as a chain, belt or Cardan shaft. The key to this riddle is a generator contained in the bottom bracket, which feeds a battery that powers the rear-wheel motor. If desired, the Mando can operate like a conventional bicycle. In this case, the electronic system powers the motor according to the power that the rider applies to the crank by pedaling. The system can also be used like a moped by turning up the throttle. Some e-bike experts believe that this technology is the future of drive systems.

Loving that protanium unit. Thanks for posting these Miles.

We have a local company (Mono pumps) that makes long/thin pumps in a shaft shape for mining applications here in Australia. I saw one deconstructed in the past - a shaft with magnets right up the length of the shaft. I'm a bottom bracket owner/fan but it never occurred to me that a shaft drive bike could have the motor built into the shaft drive. Makes good sense. I guess if that power could be reliably fed into a rear internal gearhub, and the batteries in the frame as shown then the product really does start to look like a traditional pushbike again.

Nice to see design evolving and mainstream companies like Mando picking them up. I deal with them in my work - they are quality obsessed. Let's hope it carries through...
 
That is just one of their show bikes, they called it a prototype, hence the slack belt.

That gold award ebike pretty much sums up what most people in the EU see an ebike as. Hopefully the speed pedelecs gain a bigger market share. There were great examples on show. I'll post some photos soon.
 
One of the best looking eBikes I saw on display. The M1 Sport Technik Secede.
It integrated the battery into the mudguard region. It even has a party piece of being able to split in in two for transport. See second image below.
