Time for a bump

The freewheel started to play up - bearings are noisy, the ratchet sticks and skips. Unfortunately Bafang has the wires coming out on the drive side, making the swap lengthy. Finally I got around servicing it, changing the freewheel, chain, brake pads, cleaning the bike and inspecting the motor.



The plastic gears are in great shape and on the inside the motor looks as new as the day I got it (7 Aug 2010, ~20,000km) :D

The bike is smooth and quiet once again!

very nice! Are those 10 or 12 ah headways?

How do you think a code 10 bpm would react to 20s headways with 12 fet controller? 60v x 30 amps...too much?

Nice one mate, very appropriate song too.
I must admit I've neglected the non-electric components of my commuter bike, it'll be 3 years old in August and while I've only ridden it for 2 of those 3 years given my recent downtime and rainy days I haven't touched a thing on it from a chain or gears perspective.

20,000km with gears looking like that is VERY respectable given it seems ~1500w! Do you tend to baby it off the line or launch hard ?

Hey full-throttle, I'm thinking of putting a single speed freewheel on the rear of mine, and reinstating the front shifter... How many teeth on your freewheel? And where did you get it? I was thinking a 13t, since my current 9-speed has an 11t, and the standard 22 or whatever it is seems a bit much .... Thoughts?

Shimano 3/32" got from Goldcross replaced with ACS 1/8" was from Chainreaction

The front ring is 48t

If you want a smaller one on the back you would have to find a 5sp one and get rid of the extra cogs. It will get you a better chainline too.

Whatever you do avoid using ramped cogs or rings.

Huh? by chainline, you mean it will space the single speed out so that it lines up with the front chainrings better?

what is a ramped cog or ring?

Bother. So I'm currently running 31/11 (I may have miscounted, it may be 32) which works out at 2.8 (or 2.9). So going to a 16t singlespeed and using the biggest chainring on my current shifter would be 44/16 = 2.75 (ie worse than my current setup). If I go to a 48t large front ring, I get 3, which doesn't seem that much of an advantage; maybe 52? would be better, if I can get one in a 4 bolt pattern (that's 3.25).

I notice that there are 13 and 14t single freewheels, but understand that they have a smaller 'BMX compatible' thread on them, and aren't going to fit on my X-lyte...

Nothing is ever simple, is it?

Your best option is to find a 5sp freewheel and discard all the cogs except 14t

Yeah, I had sort of come to a similar conclusion already. Talked to my shop today, seems the best I can do is a 48t front chainring, but to do that, I'd have to get all three rings 28/38/48 because they reckon the shifter won't do more than a 20 tooth difference in sizing. So it would end up being a palaver. Especially when I can just keep my current 9 speed, which has an 11t on it... Still considering whether to pull off the rear shifter now, and just lock the derailer...

I did find reference to a 'drew's adapter' which looked like it might do the job, but can't find anyone that sells them any more, plus unsure if it's the large size freewheel thread, or the smaller BMX size....

Bother!

I saw a woman with a pram walking along a shared path on the way home the other day with a brightly coloured pool noodle across the top of the pram. I thought it was an odd thing to be carrying on a walk given it stuck out a foot either side of the pram but then realised she'd probably put in there as a buffer to protect her from lycras clipping her. Kinda smart

Maybe that is what you need on the end of your bars to avoid little accidents. :lol:

My bars are already cut down so I can get through narrow gaps in fences and what not, anything making them longer would just have me hitting more stuff! But yeah, that particularly narrow bit caught me off guard :oops:

A bit of excitement this morning - the spring inside the throttle suddenly snapped resulting in WOT. The brakes are strong enough to overpower the motor, so I was able to stop the bike and turn the controller off.

Still recovering from yesterday's race I didn't really feel like hauling the bike up the last few hills, so connected it back and rode the rest with a busted throttle. That was the exciting bit :mrgreen:

I had that happen to me once, only I actually snapped the plastic of the throttle. This happened when landing hard from a jump, which made the sudden and unexpected WOT all the more challenging. I managed to stop by just moving my hand of the bars and the remainder of the throttle grip coming with me. Like you I quickly found that pedalling up hills sucked so slipped the grip back on and tried my luck. With no spring or the little post inside that stops the throttle going past "zero" I basically had a 360 spinning throttle and had to approximate where 0 was. This resulted in twisting it back down to where the bike was barely fighting against the brakes then coming to a stop. The fun part was that you had a few mm of dead spot but if you went backwards past that it suddenly went back to WOT. That made for interesting riding while approaching and waiting at intersections :lol:

Oh yeah, I rode it like that for 3 days :roll: :P

I pulled it apart and discovered that the broken end of the spring jammed the throttle at WOT

Oh well, not bad considering it was $2 from bmsbattery and lasted 20,000km

I bent the end and reassembled :mrgreen:

Good work, no one wants to pay $2 for another one! $1 per 10,000km is poor value as a consumable :mrgreen:

If you need spares I have a new throttle here that had DOA hall sensor in it, it'll only cost $7.40 in shipping to send it down to you :lol:

Thanks for the offer, but I bought 5 of them at the time so have a few spare :D

Funny enough, I replaced the cable with an abrasion resistant polyurethane one and changed the connectors to Switchcraft IP68 (waterproof) which are ~10x the price of the throttle

I guess you've earned your user name now :mrgreen:

I was seriously injured by a sudden WOT incident years ago. Mine was caused by a shorted controller, but same result.
Even with a handlebar mounted kill switch I was unable to hit the switch in time. Wheelies happen fast and it's hard to focus on hitting the switch while you're trying not to get thrown off.
