A Magura throttle is a resistive throttle that acts as a voltage divider to vary the voltage signal to the controller.

A Hall throttle uses a hall sensor to vary the voltage signal to the controller.

To check your Magura throttle, carry out the following.

Unplug the motor from the controller to make the bike safe to work on live.

Remove the Magura throttle from the handle bars and dismantle so that the 3 pot wires are exposed. (very easy to do)

Using a multi meter, check the voltage between the two outside pins. It should be 4V or 5V. Also check if the meter reads positive or negative so you can determine which wire is the ground.

Now measure the voltage between the middle leg and ground at zero throttle. It should read less then 1V.

Also measure the voltage at full throttle to make sure you are seeing 4V to 5V.

If it is reading more then 1V at zero throttle, then you have a problem with the pot.

Hope that helps.

Hi Kepler

Very nice idea! :D
Where can i buy this packs and a suitable charger?

Regards

This is the bag I used

These are the packs I used

You can get a suitable charger from HobbyKing and use a parallel charging board to charge all 3 packs at once.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11340__TURNIGY_MEGA_400W_Lithium_Polymer_Battery_Charger.html

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__15237__Parallel_charging_Board_for_6_packs_2_6S_T_Connector_.html

You would need to make up some adapters also.

Just to be clear though, this is only suitable for bike converted to LiPo, not a standard battery setup.

After riding in mud, it's not a bad idea to check the hall connector, it can get moisture inside and cause erratic operation though it does sound like yours is/was the throttle.

hi Toby i would be surprised if it were the throttle? my maguras are out in all weathers, the pot inside the housing is well sealed too? double check it, if you suspect it is the tnrottle but dont want to wait for a new one from oz, 4qd here in the uk should stock them.

Yeah Knoxie is right, I didn't catch the Magura part. I have one on my Bomber and it has been drenched more times than I can remember - and not a hitch. I've had water in the hall connector a few times, causing grinding & stuttering but never stuck WOT.

Just looked at the throttle and I hav 4.5 volts across red and black and 2 on othe wire, cannot test at full throttle as not enough hands. I am about to reassemble. Odd thing is that you turn the key and it goes to wot, then dies back to nil and throttle has no input I.e. makes no change.

I will check every connection and dry out if I see any moisture.

Ok, all back together, all connections checked, dried with airline and then hair dryer and the bike is back to 100% normal.

Now I do not know which part was to blame but I am going to recheck and check again.

Thanks for all your input guys.....really appreciate as I have a week of cycling in 2 weeks time.

Just in case I have now replaced the hall connector with an ip67 rs connector that dlogic helped me get ages ago when I got water in the original part, I had wrapped the old plug in electrical tape and then heat shrinked so I do not think this was a problem but as I had the waterproof connector I thought I may as well solder it on. (I checked ages ago with John that he was ok for me to do this) bike seems perfect again. There is a chance it as the hall as before I reset the ca there was a top speed recorded of 530mph....it used to do that when the old connector got damp.

One extra bit of info...the throttle doesn't actually say magura on it but I thought they were as standard on stealths? Maybe not? I wouldn't say there was much of a seal on there.

If it had a pot inside it was a magura. Also the Magura is a full twist throttle as apposed to the hall throttles that are usually half twist.

Either way, the checking procedure is the same. With 2V on the signal side, it looks like you were getting some stray voltage tracking through some moisture.

Glad its all fixed again.

Justtoby wrote:I NEED A LITTLE TECHY HELP

Hi Guys, I did a ride out last weekend and the bike got quite muddy so I washed it down with hot soapy water as normal and then lightly hosed off with hot water. Dried in the sun with a leather and then an air line, finished off with a bike spray to stop rust. I put the bike away and got it out a week later, turned it on and woah.....FULL throttle 4.3kw big wheelie and luckily I shut it down quickly.

I then turned the key on again, of again, on etc....it either goes Wot (wide open throttle) or nothing at all, I.e. the throttle does nothing. I have checked the 5pin sensor wire by the crank and that is dry as a bone. Do we think this is a controller issue, a throttle issue or maybe a ca issue?

Any ides.....

I have taken the end cover off the controller to let it air and the side panel is off the bike to allow airflow there.

Normally I would just ping this to John but expect he is on his weekend now.

It seems to me, that it is just like a dog....

You wash it, dry it, and it INSTANTLY tears off around the backyard trying to get dirty again. :D It just wants to feel "Natural" :D

To save yourself the trouble, after you wash it, throw a couple of handfulls of dirt at it. This should solve the problem... Regards, Stealth Electric Bike Whisperer!!

They use a standard 110mm BCD 5 bolt chainring and taking 10 seconds to pick up a tape measure or ruler and measure your bolt spacing would have told them that. You went to multiple bike shops and none of them could do something so basic ?
Maybe they were just ebike haters and couldn't be bothered, I know the guy at one of my LBS's is a turd and as soon as I mentioned ebikes to him his tune suddenly changed and became completely disinterested and openly said he wouldn't work on my bike, even though I was asking about the hydraluic brakes - which are standard across any mountain bike.
On a related note I went to put the chain on my fighter today and couldnt find my chain breaker so I went to the LBSs in my area which were all shut but this guy. I'd already measured the chain so it would have been literally a 30 second job to do but after looking across at the bike he says "I'm closing in 10 minutes, you'll have to book it in to come back another day"

There wasn't a pot as I was expecting...there were 3 wires attached to something that looked like a diode that tracks a 2 cm metal band. As there was 2v on the signal side it does look like there was some moisture somewhere, thanks for your technical input Kepler.

Important note, John read the post from China and let me know straight away that if it was a faulty part he would send straight away.

I too have found snobbery in local bike shops, they just want to hate it and they automatically think its some low powered shopping bike for fat, lazy, people.
I like the idea that the bike just wants to get dirty lol......I used to go out with a girl like that but that's for another part of the Internet .........

I get the same poor attitude from my local bike shop owner. Basically he says they are just gay motorbikes and cant see the point in them. I want to tell him he is an idiot so badly but sometimes but I do sometimes need to get a small bike item quickly and with him being only 5 minute away, no point making life difficult for myself.

He could have had some much more business from me over the years if he wasn't such a d##k.

Saw at least 4 e bikes on the way to work this morning. So it's definitely on the rise. Those bike shops will either change their attitude soon or go out of business. Just like Kodak.

Could any one post up a link with where to buy the 70A Anderson plugs for the batteries please?
Preferably in the uk or a part number for the plugs. I can only find 50A or 175A connectors.
Im building my lipo pack :-)

Alternative source. Used RS-Online before, they ship very quickly.

This is the same one that's on the Fighter from the look of it. Not sure if the Bomber uses the same one as the Fighter though.

Thanks for the info on the sprocket Hyena . Happy I can go & order one . Yes they asked what type of bike it was off & when I mentioned it was an electric bike I definitely noticed a different attitude . Looking at some of the bikes in the shop I was sure they had the same type of sprocket as I was after , but just decided to leave .
