My landlord had this sweetie for sale @ $300 on Kijiji, no sale.
My girl bought it from him for $150.
Original sold for $750cdn. Still has rubber nubs on center of tire. 10km tops.
Lightweight, alu., NuVinci, dual discs, fenders/rack. Quality welding, beautiful actually.
Not your average box store crap.

She wants to keep it a pedal only bike, so we lose weight.
I cannot disagree, especially after riding it. & I have @ least 40lbs to lose.
Smoothest, solidest, best equipped bike Ive had @ my disposal.

Of course I already have a plan to fill the triangle with a Cell_man 52v triangle pack & 350watt Mac on the front.
Would make a true electric bicycle. As in, meant to be pedaled. :wink:
Just a little help up hills/getting home.
I 'll have to do some serious sweet talking, I mean, educating of my lady to sway her in that direction.
Would be a good replacement for "Simplicity" after I finish ScootBike.

I sure hope this story/thread continues.

If anyone has any info on this bike it would be much appreciated.
I will have to do some reeducating on the NuVinci as well.
Thoughts/concerns, I found some odd stiffness/reluctance in gear changes, that then disappeared.
Might just need to be worked in, as it is like NOS.
I suspect the frame to be a name brand re-badged. Trek or Giant or such.
To high a quality to be a wally brand /quality Chinese bike.

Aw man.. keep it on 36v, really! You'll do low 20mph figures, which is perfect for pedalin' along. Once you get into the 30mph zone, it really loses the eBike feel. And you need a massive chainring on the front, then you start vying for suspension and bigger tires.. it will really lose it's bike feel.

$150 isn't such a bad deal.

Just about the limit of what I consider a legal electric bicycle & what it should be.
Plus you will be just a bit quicker than all the legal eBikes. :wink:

I think $150 is a steal for a NOS. bike like this.

Walmart Canada offers craptastic bikes @ higher prices. You Yanks are lucky in that regard.
Canadians get screwed on the prices& availability of many things, Bikes, Cars, etc.

Might have to sell Ghetto to justify it to her.

I look @ it & see a small front geared hub.

Sort of.. the front 350w is in between the speed of the BMC torque ( 10T MAC ) and BMC speed ( 8T MAC ).
You will end up going 48-49kph i think on 52v.

But that will use around 1000w continuous. I'm not sure if the motor can handle that.

yeah. probably pushin' it. @ 1000w. in 700c wheel.
To bad the 500w doesnt fit the front disc.
MAC 500w 10 or 12 T as mid drive it is. :twisted:
design thoughts & plans to come. 20" re-lace, lipo, mid-drive crankset., lightweight :wink:

I'm in the process of trying to buy stuff for a similar build. I have a steel frame road bike with Nuvinci N360 hub. Looking at the MAC front 350W and 52V cellman battery. I'm shooting to for top speed of 25mph and cruising and uphill speed closer to 20mph.

Wish you luck. Looks to be a real sweet ride for the money. I think that's the older Nuvinci 171 which can handle alot more power than the n360 if you want to go the chain driven motor route. If you could pair with the Harmony Auto Drive...real nice.

Thanks for the 171 tip.
I am trying to figure out which model it was.
It takes like 720 degrees of rotation between high & low.
That sounds like the original 171 model? Eh.
I like it a lot as a pedal bike @ 20-30kph.
If she / I don't use it much as a pedal bike, then the conversion can begin.

All right 3 things.

1. I am way out of shape cardiovascularly.
I just got back from a half hour ride, some mild hills to try the NuVinci out.
I had both a possible heart attack & mild stroke. Maybe at the same time. :oops:
I'm not converting this thing till I lose @ least 40lbs. I'm 5'9" 220lbs. So maybe never :roll:
After High school I was 190lbs. After a few years of the factory I was a svelte 165. :wink:
Sexy like a boxer.
Now I am fat, sad and old.
Getting in shape is priority #1 in my life from this moment forward.
I guess riding a pedal bike is ok :roll: :lol:
This will be a long term project.

2. I would not dare go over 30kph on 700c 28 tires.
I was a nut as a kid on the ole 10speed. Not @ the ripe old age of 35.
This defiantly needs to roll 26"x1.75 max front/the fork is tight yo. The rear offers more width.
Maybe 20" x 2.5 I think its spread enough @ 10" ish radii.
I think the width of a mans tires should reflect his age. I'm about 2.5" wide now.

3. This thing is NOS & from the assembly quality was purchased from a Costco & assembled by a chimp.
The local LBS the one I like, offers classes once a week, for a month.
Ive always wanted to attend & learn how-to maintenance.
Basically you bring in your own bike & learn to/do strip it down to pieces & rebuild over the 4 classes/month.
This bike needs it & so do I.
Ill get in the next cycle.

That NuVinci is definitely an N171. Eight balls to the N360's six. Once I got my N171 broken in, it always had a bit of stiffness shifting under load. Upshifting under load was hard till about center of the gear range, then it got easier from there till full overdrive. Downshifting was the same - hard under load until you got to the halfway point, then it got easy all the way to granny gear. I never got used to the upshifting stiffness - one always upshifts as they come up to speed. The downshifting I learned to compensate for... If I started uphill, all I needed to do was start downshifting a little ahead of where I needed to, so I never got to really mashing the gears. This way I never has so much torque on the system as to make shifting stiff.
1st build: Dahon Jetstream folding bike. Quick, reliable, capable of 30mph. Light enough to lift, folds for easy transport by car/bus/train.
2nd build: RC powered 2009 Norco A-Line. Top speed 31mph. Built like a tank, it's resistant to Boston potholes, can stop on a dime, easily goes up/down curbs when necessary.
3rd build (just started): Scratch build ultimate utility bike.

I noticed it shifted better without load. I think it'll be easy to get used to.
It certainly is stiff & the amount of rotation is redonkulous, seems like 3 full turns, 1080 degrees, but I quite like it.
Shifting from stopped is golden.

8 vs 6 ball. So this theoretically can handle 25%'ish more power/torque. :wink:
Do you'll think 1500w continuous on the N171 is too much?
