Actually the vast majority of bikes made today and for the past 50 years come from China. And the North American Trade Agreement has nothing to do with it. However, I agree with you 100%. The problem is greed. Did you see the clip on the IPod on the news this evening? It showed it being made in a Chinese factory where the average worker earned $2 per hour. Where as the average worker doing the same job here in the US would be paid $23 per hour. So what is the real problem? Is it the fact that we Americans want to make to much money? Or is it the fact that Apple waht to much profit? Personally, I think it's both...I have always told my wife I would be very happy to pay extra if I knew the product were made here in the USA. But how much more? I'd be willing to pay an extra 10% for a comperable product if it were made in the USA. I would think many other people would agree with this. But would that be enough to actually get it done? There are already bike manufactures here in the US. But I'm guessing any ebike they manufactured would be well out of my reach.

If you are so graciously willing to pay an additional 10%, do you think Americans would be willing to work for $2.20/hr. (presumably without benefits of any kind) building Ipods ? How do you think that will fly with the unions?

Dave Ramsey said something recently I really liked. Can't remember it word for word but it was basically, "The new definition of greed seemes to be something like 'If you have something I want and you won't give it to me, then YOU are greedy.'"

If that's the case. Why do they cost so much? Like you said Greed!.

If they make $2 per hour,
then how can they afford to buy a "I-POS" thing?

Yeah, greed for sure. Couldn't have anything to do with the manufacturing cost being just a small part of the cost of bringing an Ipod to market, nope, definitely greed.

Gosh, how about $12 per hour to work in a factory?
Wouldn't be a problem telling someone to stop being a lazy slacker on welfare & get a job, would it?
We'd go from a lack of jobs to a surplus rather quickly.

I've worked harder for less when i was younger. I never made $23/hr. in my life even doing network administration.

Remember it doesn't matter if a robot is working in china or the us. That can take the willingness to work for $2/hr out of the picture.

When you think about high production volumes, using automation and elegant engineering makes alot of sense. It is hard for an OEM to sell a $10k electric motorbike with less specs than a $10K gas bike. To really enter a competitive segment an electric motorbike would need to be similar to a drz400 or other 450cc dirt bike in performance and only slightly more expensive >$6k. I think with proper planning, distributors, factory, and tooling it would be possible. Unfortunately the barrier to entry is extremely high in this style of business. No investor is confident in the lightweight electric motorbike market so building the organization w/o the capital would be a tough hurdle.

I think what I was saying was misunderstood by some. I'll put it this way.....yes as americans many of us are over paid for the level of work we do. But this is only a general observation and not intended to point a finger at any person or job. We are also very spoiled on the cost of goods. I traveled and lived in several internation cities for more then 40 years before I retired. And I know what many things cost in other contries where the pay scale is as low ass 25% of US pay. I'm not saying this is right. Just pointing out the facts.

When I said the problem is greed I was refering to both some american wages and corporate profit. I remember reading an article on Nike. It claimed that some Nike shoes cost under $2 a pair to manufacture. So assuming this is true what is a reasonable corporate profit? 200%...400% ? If it's 400% that would make that shoe selling for $8 a pair. You seen any Nikes selling for 8 bucks lately? That's what I am talking about as greed. I'm thinking Jorden can afford to stop getting millions of dollars for his name on a shoe. Or is there another BB team he's looking to buy?

Personally I think many products can be manufactured here in the US for little more then they are manufactured in other contries. Remember it's not just the manufacturing of an item but shipping and a lot of other issues that add to the cost. So when I say I am willing to pay an additional 10% I think this is a very resonable number. If it's not then why can GM, Ford and Chysler compete with Toyota and the like. Consider the fact that many of the foreign cars sold in the US are actually manufactured or at least assembled in the US.

In my area one of the TV stations had a "made in America" news program. In this program they showed US manufactures that actually were selling their products for less then their foreign counterparts. But yet many stores were only offering the foreign made products. Why? Because they assumed if it was made "over there" it was cheaper. Just like people insist that foreign cars must be better because thier "made over there". Not!!

Just my opinion.

First, shoot all the GREEDY Lawyers. They will stop at nothing, to shut down a large company, just to get their 40+% for their customers.

Then, shoot all the GREEDY-STUPID Politicians. Why would a Politico need 2-3 houses-mansions, and make incredibly stupid salaries, while flushing the country down the toilet ?? YOU need to move to get a job, YOU need to sell, downgrade the price, to be able to go elsewhere.

I think it was Romney, I read about, yesterday. He wants the GOVT to back the warranties on NEW USA built automobiles, so the Sheeple can have confidence in buying a NEW USA automobiles.

Remember when Toyota first introduced the pickups in the USA ?? They were junk. Then, they wised up and made the USA stuff look like junk. THIS is how you make stuff in the USA, and, CHARGE THAT IMPORT FEE. The hell with Clintons FREE trade deal.

OK, I will go on record saying that when I win the lottery, I will use that to do whatever I can to help the cause of producing AFFORDABLE, QUALITY e-transportation vehicles in the USA. Until then, I still have to work full-time at my day job.

Notice, I didn't say that I'd start an ebike factory, at least not at first. In order to accomplish this goal, before the factory, we need to:

1. Develop a cost-effective method for purifying rare-earth metals in large quantities. We have the metals in the ground, we need to get them to a useful state (pure) without losing our shirts. Then we can develop the magnets we need.

2. Expand the development and manufacture of lithium (or better) batteries in the US, and find a way to make the good ones catastrophe-proof. You can get good batteries from China, but I keep on reading about the poor quality control, which has apparently even affected the big users (i.e., Chevrolet).

With those two out of the way, guaranteeing a stable supply of the essential parts for an EV, perhaps we can then start building them in reasonable quantities, develop an EV-friendly infrastructure, and work on the legislators to get reasonable laws and regulations for their use.

Nice post Cameron. Stabilizing the supply is vital. There is always an engineering solution for a resource problem through. If the rare eart magnets are a major issue with fluctuations in supply/price then it might be smart to explore the options. If you raise the pack voltage you could move into an induction motor and eliminate the need for expensive permanent magnets.

Batteries are truly the issue here. A123, panasonic, or kokam is the route I would want to go in something mass produced. I haven't heard any numbers >$600 KW/HR. Tesla has there pack price down to $200 kw/hr so apparently its possible.

I was just watching the news on ABC and they had their segment on "Made in America". It showed a company that made light bulbs in China for sale here in the US. This company was closing the factory in China and moving it back to the US. The question was asked "how can you save money by making the product in the US?". The answer is in productivity. Acording to information in this segment the average American worker is 3.4 time more productive then the average Chinese worker. Who would have thought?

They also indicated that many companies that have been using foreign phone service providers (my personal pet peve) are not turning back to using Americans because they too improve the quality and level of service.

Sorry for quoting myself, but I just read in yesterday's issue of Talanta, a major chemistry journal, that some significant progress has been made on the first problem: purifying rare-earth metals, with "ionic liquids." The link sends you to the TOC of the current issue, the article is available by subscription only (or purchase of this article only @ $41.95), and I can't post it anywhere on the Web myself without breaking copyright. Anyway, in short, it's really technical, with a plethora of 10-syllable words, but it's really good work. BTW, the primary author, Sheng Dai, works at U Tenn. Nanochemistry Center and Oak Ridge Nat. Lab. It shouldn't take very long to develop purification schemes for rare earths in kilogram quantities, then scale them up from there.

I was also reading about A123, Dow Kokam, and Johnson Controls-Saft, that they are building capacity in the US to come on line by the end of 2012 which will be able to expand enough to supply batteries for EVs through the end of the decade. At the moment, they are concentrating on contracts for small passenger cars (Chevy Spark "next year"), fleet vehicles (EV delivery trucks), and buses (Ford Transit Connect).

Things look pretty good at the moment. The only thing disappointing is that I didn't win the lottery last night. Well, there's always tonight.

If a large appropriate city, such as San Diego or Raleigh NC, passed laws and then had ebikes and public transport as protected forms of transportation, then household income needs would drop by about 1ok per year before taxes, or the cost of using/having one car.

this would decrase the cost of living due due decreased family expenses, and decrease the cost of labor for manufacturing.

could be done, but have to wait for more expensive car costs.
