Elation V3

Postby lesspedal » Fri Aug 13, 2010 6:45 am

Talking to Allan Dow from elation,

Elation version 3 to be unveiled at Melbourne Ausbike show, sat 21/8 at showgrounds.
He has some apparatus with both v3 and a hub motor fitted to measure performance between the two.

I think it promises to be very interesting. :?:

Come on Allan, how about a teaser for us ES folks, we won't tell anyone we promise....

Does it have secret orangutan quantum power?
If you agree, say nothing.

Well, to be more precise.
Allan will have a bike fitted with TOTALLY NEW ELATION [v3] as well as a hub motor, on same bike, connected to instrument to measure power.

Maybe this will put gear drive versus hub debate to bed. :?:

Elation concept bike.

Visited Ausbike melbourne today, lots of ebikes on display, hub motors of unknown brands.

Then Elation V3.

Some info from flyer!

48v system, integrated gearing and clutch. [200w]
48v 7ah 2c battery pack, life po4 in alloy case.
Elation crank system, 48/38/28 alloy rings, elation 'spider' complies complies with bicycling industry standard 110/74 bcd for crank rings
[ meaning crank rings can be purchased off the shelf if required]

Also on display ,elation concept bike, for those who prefer step thru design.

Alan also had bike fitted with rear hub together with elation v2, connected to medusa meter connected to laptop.
Bike then fitted tightly to trainer.
Hub motor showing 800 to 900 watts to move wheel.
Elation system showing 250 to 300 watts to drive wheel. [Is this telling us something?]

Hey lesspedal - do you have any more photos of the V3?

Where is the battery housed?

It looks like a neat design, I wonder if it functions any better than V2? After all, they're both 200W!

Thanks for that. (btw I think you mean V3).

Pity, I quite like the mounting in the 'v' section, but the rack does give more flexibility regarding suspention systems etc.

I hope Alan puts some videos up soon. Especially comparing it with the hub motor.

Waxman,

The v3 operates the same as v2, ie, drives the crank, motor is bolted on left hand side, motor drive chain was between crank rings and bb.

Krisscros,

The elation concept bike [ pics a few threads back] was fitted with nuvinci 360.

The elation web page was been updated with the pictures and details of V3: http://www.elationebikes.com.au/index.htm

The introduction price is heaps cheaper and looks a lot neater!

My v2 kit installed in July 2010 is still really good, but who feels they should have waited? :)

My V2 was bought in March/April (not sure which).

Personally I prefer the battery mounted in the 'V' (to use the technical term). I'm curious as to why Elation has moved to a rear mount. I wonder if there are problems with the mid-mounting?

The motor does look much cleaner, but I'm waiting on more photos. I still like the look of the V2. It's a nice simple, elegant solution - V3 may be as well.

Still no videos yet either! Hopefully not long.

Allan told me that the v2 battery fitting limited the type of frames that it suited, with rear mount battery fitting, the system can now be fitted to almost all frames, dual susp, step thru, etc.

I guess that would be true. It would be nice to have the option of the 'mid mount', but realistically Allan does need to produce a single standard system to keep prices down.

My bother is that I want to fit one to a Kona Ute (http://www.konaworld.com/bike.cfm?content=ute). The new rack won't exactly fit...although looking at the photo again, I'm not sure it will fit in the 'V' either!

But this is an unusual bike, and I'll probably transfer across my V2 - it might need something a little customised!

I wonder who manufactures the new V3 motor/gearbox? The Headline electric model used in the V2 has been scrapped but it's replacement looks nothing like any other i've seen on other ebike setups - custom or commercialised. Custom job i wonder?

The rack supplied with the system has a 'shelf ' for the battery with the top of rack like any other, accepts saddle bags etc, I'm sure could be easily modified to suit kona ute.

I'm not sure how. Have a look at the Ute - it has a rack that is more than twice the length of a normal rack built into the frame which is reinforced to allow the carrying of cargo. It also carries 2 custom sized saddle bags.

I'm sure something could be worked out and I don't think it would be a deal breaker.

Yes, according to Allan it is very much a custom job.
