Ok, it has to be asked...
Whats the best way to make one go faster for $100? $200?

$20 - replace 20T motor side freewheel with 16T ACS "Southpaw" freewheel.
Shorten chain by 2 Teeth.
Increases speed from 16 mph to 20 mph!
I've done this upgrade on 3 EZips.

That is the "bargain" upgrade.
Other upgrades have bumped speed near 30 mph.
Most for less than $100!
"Homemade" 25.9v Li-ion battery pack. w/16T upgrade = 22 mph
36v upgrade = 23 mph +16T upgrade = 27 mph
14-28T 7spd freewheel replaced w/11-34T = pedal assist to near 30 mph!
Proposed 48v "Turbo" upgrade = 30 mph estimated probable!

Nice! What's the reliability of said up-grades? I know that the basic set-ups are pretty solid, and I know anytime you hot-rod anything, some goes, but just curious. :)

I have a standard 24V eZip-like motorized bike(Curry Mongoose) that runs pretty well, however, it's whiny at 24V. Everyone around you knows you've got a motorized bike! I can't imagine how annoying it would be at 36 or 48V!

My e-bikekit motorized Tidalforce is almost completely silent in comparison. I'm planning on changing the Curry motor with an e-bikekit in the future.

36v "bump up" produces a "throatier tone". At near 25mph the motor sound is about the same volume as the wind rushing past your ears!

16T upgrade gives 25% more speed but 20% less torque.
11-34T 7spd upgrade has no downside except $33 cost. Wider spaced gears are better w/electric assist!
I've run 36v for 6000+ miles on various bikes, with no related problems.
48v "Turbo" upgrade is "conditional" to insure survivability!

Impressive! How loud is it at 48V? Blender Whine? Buzz Saw? Gas Turbine?

24v is loud and whiny, sounds like a small blender.
I imagine that 36v is worse ( however, the currie motors can only handle that for so long. )
48v = fun for a few minutes, then time to buy a new motor.

As for the chassis of these bikes.. from what i've seen, kinda crummy welds and heavy.. essentially a wal-mart bike.

A nice start, but will be outgrown in short time.

Still about the best option for an ebike under $500, unless you have Amberwolf skills.

Upgrading for much money would be stupid though, since you can buy hub kits with sla's pretty cheap.

That's the problem, if we ever just used these bikes at the voltage they were designed at, how would we have any safe, reliable, SLOW E-Bikes?!?!

You gotta smoke something, (better the tires than the motor I say .. ) or it just isn't the same!

I was browsing ebay, and noticed the 36v motors are only about $80. So as far as smoking a motor goes, that's a pretty cheap one.

So that upgrade makes sense.

I think your misinturpeting the idea of upgrading to 36v. By changing a 24v motor with a 36v motor is no real change in torque or speed. The ide is to run a 24v rated motor at 36v therefore, significantly increasing the RPM (speed and torque). of the motor. This does work well and many people have had good long term luck doing this. DrkAngel said is he has 6,000 miles on several bikes. But Drk please clarify ....is that on each bike or cumlitive between all the bikes you are speaking of. If I remember correctly that's cumulative between all 3 of your EZips. Correct?

6000 miles@36v, on 2 EZip Mountain Trailz, #2@3000+ and #1@3000-. They were early 2008 models, so the controller supported 36v with no modification. #2 received 36v from day 1, much later I added the 16T upgrade, in conjunction with street worthy tires and the 11-32T 7spd upgrade. With pedal assist, 30 mph is obtainable. I've maintained 30mph for several miles with either a tail wind or drafting behind a larger vehicle. Above 20 mph, wind resistance is the major limiting factor. #2, I left geared for lower speed, and am presently running through its second winter, yes, I added studded tires.

The EZip oem 24v motor, run at 36v increases speed & torque by nearly 50%! 16mph > 23mph & power output increased from 450watts to 675watts. 750 watts = 1hp.

EZip #3 is a Trailz, not Mtn Trailz, slightly newer so it would have required a 36v controller. It was my testbed for the 16T freewheel upgrade and my 25.9v Li-ion build. Also tried a 24v Nimh build, using 20 - 7000mah D cells, it was better than SLA, but nowhere near Li-ion. Also added an 11-28T 7spd freewheel. Cruise speed is 22 mph, I can maintain 25 mph for brief periods, pedal assisted for a mile or 2.

DrkAngel, i appreciate your eZip articles on here for when i had mine up and running. But i'm wondering why you like this bike so much?

A hub motor would be so much quieter, more efficient, and probably faster per watt than what you have.

Those bikes are also ungodly heavy. Sadly, most of the weight is in the frame on some!!!
My trek 4300 with hub motor + 10ah batteries weighs as much as my currie-mongoose frame without the motor, battery or controller !!

A complete, fully functional electric vehicle, delivered to my door for less than $350!

It's what I started with, and I developed inexpensive upgrades.

I recommend it as a great "starter" ebike. "To help your decide exactly what you need, or want, in a better, more expensive, ebike."

I picked up one, from Toys-R-us for $239, then sold the battery for $120, then sold the charger for $40. So actual cost was $80 & about $70 for shipping & tax. So $150 for ebike, all ready for my homemade Li-ion pack. (25.9v, 31.2ah, 9lb 2oz)

Hey, they are a good starter. If you have a steep hill, they may actually work better than the other typical starter, a small gearmotor with 200 watts.

Yes, noisy. But for those who don't have $1000 for a decent hub kit and a quality lifepo4, this is a good choice. Since they were often priced at about $450 lately, the sale is good news for those on tight budgets like starving students.

To upgrade the 24v ones, I suppose you'd need a new controller too. But $80 to replace a motor is phenomenal compared to a hubmotor at $250 or so.

And drinking largely, sobers us again.
