It's not actually a thermometer. I know we ebikers have trouble trying to monitor the temp of our hubs because most thermometers don't go up high enough. With this you could literally monitor anything! And it's only $12! Sure electronics is pretty cool. I've got one of their temp sensors on the way. I'll have to take it apart and see if it's actually just this unit programed to do temp only.

Earlier I might of said we needed a thermistor, but really a thermocouple is what would work.

Isn't the first one just the display? I like the second one though for measuring motor temp, and batt pack or controller temp. $40 seems a bit high though.

I bought mine at Canadian tire store. What make it great is that it have an alarm setpoint!

All my ebikes have one and i never burned any hub with my 10-20kW..

I leave the winding going up to 140 celsius .. than i decrease throttle.

Yeah john it's just the display, but all you need is a thermocouple, a computer, and the simple math to use it it to monitor any temperature.

My favorite is the hobbyking vt monitor. It needs a 4-25V source and it goes up to 150C. It has a programmable temperature alarm as well as a low voltage alarm if you desire.

Great idea Doc, is there a link about how you installed the probes inside..? I was thinking about getting a dual probe BBQ thermometer, one for the controller and the other one for the coils of the X5, do you have some tips for installation..? Does the induction of the windings have an affect on the probe inside the hub..? Please be so kind to point me to some link where you or anyone has already done that, I would appreciate that very much.

My thermistor is installed right under the windings, probably the hottest spot in the motor:

The problem I have with the traxxis is that it doesn't run on 12v so you have to manually power it on and maybe change the batteries once every 5 years (kidding really)

The same is true for the BBQ sensor and IRRC neither are back lit.

The original one is made by SURE. They also make plug and play thermometers that are 12v and back lit. Also they're $12 shipped.

OTOH, the original temp sensor I posted is scalable.... so you could literally monitor any temp you want by using the appropriate thermocouple and programing via usb the display to what ever you want.

My sure thermometer should be here tomorrow(after almost a month ), so I'll posts some pics once it's all setup to monitor my ping pack this summer.

Yet, the temperature range is not sufficient, it goes from -10 to 60 Centigrade (I dunno how much that is in Farenheit) for one model and from -20 to 120 Centigrade ont he other. And, the X5 motor (5305) can sustain 140 degrees Centigrade with no problem if proper venting and cooling is arranged. If you could find a similar model but with a temperature range of -60 to at least +200 that would be more convenient for X5 use.

Those are quite cheap, yet it could be useful to have dual probes and dual display, that way we could monitor both the controller temperature and the motor, do you know of any good yet cheap dual probe thermometers that measure up to +200 degrees Centigrade..?

And the induction of the motor windings does not influence the probe, that is awesome info..! Did you have to bend the probe or was it a smaller one with plastic insulation wires? Does the heat melt the wire insulation..?

The thermistor is tiny, no bending required. You just need to remove it from its protective metal casing and feed the wires through the axle

Obviously, you should do this at the same time as you are replacing the stock phase wires with something beefier (12-10AWG).

Ok guys....some one really needs to get the scalable meter I posted at the top of the thread.

It should be very simple to set it up with the proper thermocouple and scale it to the proper temp range. A whole lot simpler and easier than taking apart a motor to install a temp plug!

Came today - got it installed in my latest project - the cooled battery box for the lawn care bike - I got fans in the box as well as the thermo and I'm gonna monitor the internal temp of the PING as well as the battery box. Liveforphysics strongly disagrees with this being necessary, but cycle fade does happen at higher temps and I'm curious just hot hot a battery gets on the inside. Hopefully I won't need this, but I'll be using this bike in the 100 and 10 million degrees of a texas summer!

I got them for 3$ each.. I bought 5 of them.

They can display up to 110 celsius( tested) and are really small

Doc, ifI think that the white one has an auto shut-off feature. It turns the display off after 10-15 minutes which is really annoying. I much prefer the Canadian Tire one that is always on and has a built-in alarm. Great find.

I just wrote sure electronics asking them if they can provide a dual thermometer that goes up to 200c, or if they could provide instructions on using the resalable digital display too monitor temperature.

The dual temp sensor would be great, but it might be just as easy to use 2 or more sensors with the rescalable digital display. A switch would be easiest, but some sort of system that switches automatically every 5 seconds would be great too. Imagine monitoring a motor, controller, battery, and ambient! Any thoughts on how to do this?

With my 9c I used cat5 wires.. The thin teflon wire that connects the halls might be better tho... 36ga is pretty light so I don't know about that it almost looks like magnet wire
