Increasing top speed 500W E-Scooter?

Postby sulihakh » Wed Nov 30, 2011 4:16 am

Hi, recently I found out about e-scooters/ebikes and I became interested in getting one.
I am interested in getting this model:
http://www.giobikes.com/Electric-Scoote ... E-Scooter/
I am aiming to get a top speed of around 60KM/H, and I read that doing a shunt mod will increase the speed by approx. 10-15KM/H which would leave me around 45KM/H.
I also read that installing a Delta-Y switch is like installing an electronic gear, which can also increase top speed.
I'm not sure if I should get an extra battery for a voltage upgrade + do the shunt mod or do the shunt + Delta-Y switch.
I can do the shunt mod easily, as I have been dealing with electronics as a hobby ever since I was a child, but I'm not sure how to go about doing the Delta-Y mod. Someone put an ad on Kijiji saying that they could do a Delta-Y mod on ebikes for $160, so I was thinking about that, but it seams a bit pricey.

I'm pretty sure I can go about doing the Delta-Y mod myself, but I just haven't found any straight forward instructions, if you could link me that would be great!

Please Advise!

I think modding a gio with speed and delta is not the best idea-INMYHO-

Get a better bike for all those mods-speed kills if you modify the wrong bike.

Look at some better bikes that are built on frames that can handle the speed and mods.

Like mine-motorino xpn-built on a small motorcycle frame to go the distance with the speed.

Good luck with your search.

A Shunt mod plus an extra battery, bringing your bike to 60v, will get you most of the way there. Keep in mind that more current to your motor means reduced range.

I agree that gio bikes are just not built for speeds faster than 50km/hr, if even that. I have a gio 500+ with these mods, and it's fast enough for me. The speed wobble on gios is really bad.

Switching to some Lithium variant of batteries will help as well...but that's certainly not cheap.

+1 Motorinos or Scooteretti's are way better scooters with way better frames and proper brakes that can better handle higher speeds. They are also 3x as expensive.

Well I'm a high school student and really the only reason why I want to get an electric scooter is because I wont need insurance and wont have to pay for gas and some of them are available for relatively cheap, like the GIO, so once I have something that can be driven on the road with a fairly decent top speed (50km/h is good) then I'd be happy. I'm kind of on a low budget too, only looking to spend around $600 plus a little more for the extra battery so I think shunt + battery would be my best bet with the GIO? I prob wont go past 50km/h, I just need something of decent speed to move me around.

I would buy a used one of those better quality brands you mentioned, but I wouldn't want to have to replace the battery too because I know those are real expensive.
Thanks alot for the quick responses.

Depending on where you are, at those speeds (50km/h) it's probably not just a scooter anymore, and might be a moped or motorcycle, requiring license/registration/insurance. Might want to check into that if you haven't already.

Some places (like here in the valley metro area I live in) the legal system has been known to give the big three tickets (no license, registration, or insurance) to poeple riding motorized bicycles above the state limit of 20MPH. So far that's always been gas-powered ones AFAIK, but I myself wouldn't want to be the first example of an electric-powered ticket set, at over $1000 in fines plus probably losing the bike. :(

Don't know what it's like where you are, but just thought you might want to think about that.
