Tandem Electric Kayak

Postby Andes » Wed Feb 01, 2012 7:03 pm

Well, after building a tandem electric bike, we needed a tandem electric Kayak, don't we?

Here is a video were we take a tour at the Rio Parana delta, here in Argentina.

The motor is a Torqeedo 801 travel, with an 9p8s A123 battery pack with is the same I use in my electric chopper.

Hope you like it as much as we. :D

Now press the youtube tab and paste that code in the middle
[you tube]OYl4NO5m16Q[/you tube] it will look like this and then you preview and you should see the video pic

This is my low budget Lipo canoe set up. 3s3p Turnigy 5000 pack and cheap Minn Kota motor. Works well for my needs.

It is the 12v cheapie. With a nice light canoe it has plenty of push. 3s 3p lipo pack give nice range. I may have some more cells to add to the canoe pack soon..

This motor has done me good
I got it for $100 shipped a few years ago.
This is my quick and dirty mount. The 2"x2" twists a bit along its length when you accelerate the motor but it seems functional. The shorter piece of wood is cut at an angle at the ends to match the contour of the canoe interior sides.
I still want to find an appropriate box to contain the battery. Tupperware?

Looks good 100lbs thrust would make my canoe do a wheelie.

Probably a 10 s hobby king pack plus an lvc of some sort. I just use a cell log and keep an eye on the cell levels while on the water

I'll keep my 5 yr old Torqeedo. Can't wait to go sailing! 15C in Toronto today. My Torqeedo batteries have improved in performance over the years I've owned them. Just getting worked in.
Don't hear many people combining sail with e power, but they compliment each other incredibly. It is sort of like pedal assisting an ebike, except sailing doesn't require effort either. Amazing range increase when the motor is barely running and the sail is up. Even in the lighest of breezes. The sensation is of sailing, since the Torqeedo is invisible, but the boat keeps moving thru the lulls and sails closer to straight into the wind. I run from morning to midnight and have NEVER drained both batteries in one day.
Genco marine in To. have a lightly used one sitting in their showroom, an 801 24v. Make 'em an offer. 416-504-2891
I have the 401 12v which moves my 17' double ended sprit rigged, rowing and sailing skiff at hull speed.

I am a sailor myself. I've often described e-biking to people as a lot like sailing actually. I have a small (16 ft.) displacement boat; a 900 lb. Gloucester 16. I got a 2 hp Honda 4 stroke that I use with it. Pretty noisy. I've often thought electric would be the way to go. Maybe I should start thinking seriously about it. What do they want for the 801? How much battery? Shipping would be pricey to the southeast US, I think.

I love sailing too. I had a little 18ft fixed keel sailboat for a few years and loved it. I used the cheapie Motor Guide 12v motor in the marine and a Honda 4 out on the San Francisco bay. I wanted to go 100% electric but the current in the San Francisco bay is so fierce in some areas that electric battery capacity could be drained and you would be sucked out to sea quickly.
I wonder if you could get any regen from the electric. There are many days were you sail for hours in heavy winds where the prop dragging would not slow you down very much I guess. If you are already at max hull speed you have extra sail power to burn right?
