PickleCycle Build

Postby plasmadust » Sun Apr 01, 2012 10:44 am

Thought I would start posting some of the stuff we build at what we call Caveman Engineering.
Over the last few yaers we have made some, shall we say unconventional, electric vehicles. Mostly bikes and trikes, but we have also done, and are doing buses, conversions of M-113 Gavins and scout recon vehicles.
The guy that we built this for is Durwood Pickle (yes, that is his name), a retired architech. The goal was minimal parts and fabrication to make basic transportation.
This is second prototype and we got the final design to just eight pieces of metal with only straight cuts and a few holes.

The creativity of people's bike builds never ceases to amaze me!
1st build: Dahon Jetstream folding bike. Quick, reliable, capable of 30mph. Light enough to lift, folds for easy transport by car/bus/train.
2nd build: RC powered 2009 Norco A-Line. Top speed 31mph. Built like a tank, it's resistant to Boston potholes, can stop on a dime, easily goes up/down curbs when necessary.
3rd build (just started): Scratch build ultimate utility bike.

That would be an awesome runabout for car shows and stuff!
Power is a fascinating thing, the more you have, the more you want, but the real power is having the restraint not to use it all at once...............Um...Yeah..

The harder you work.....The luckier you get!!

Kinda where we were going with it.
Bunch of NASCAR folks want it already with team colors.
I was thinking of tailgaters, RVers and resort areas.
Going to put some 3 inch balloon tires on the next one so's not to get too bogged down in sand. South Padre Island here we come!

I think this is larger photo.
Motor is our design, Going Electric, geared 500W w/25A controller (9fet)
Battery is LiFePO4 prismatic cell 36V with 6 + 6 length wise layout that leaves plenty of room for cabling to run thru frame, which is 4 X 4 sq. 6061 aluminum. There is room for 48V as well.
We are going to go to wider dropout on next version so we can put a 205mm or larger disc rotor back there. for now there is rim brake in rear that we found a new compound pad for. The new pads are freaking awsome stopping power. Just light touch on brake lever and it gives you twice the grip of any rim brake I have ever seen. Moderate pull and it will lock up the rear tire.
Front fork is Origin 8 off the shelf.
Twist grip throttle, we had 4 types to choose from. This one with the metal ends looked coolest.
rear dropout is 0.500" X 3" 6061 flat stock, cut out to let the rear stanchions sit flush on the inside.
Foot pegs were added after powder coating. Originally there was a post mid frame with pegs, but just looked akward, so cut it off before paint.
Gets easy 20 miles on a charge.

That looks a lot better.. before I thought the yellow parking block was part of the bike.

Interesting concept.
