Evehicle-Full Faring Kit for Tadpole?

Postby cbr shadow » Tue Mar 20, 2012 3:17 pm

Before I buy a tadpole I'd like to know if there is a full faring kit available for tadpoles..? Is any certain type/brand/model tadpole set up better for this? My goal is to get a tadpole, add electricity, add faring kit. By faring kit I mean: I saw a guy the other day that had a red/white faring kit on a tadpole that completely surrounded him. When he got out of it the top & windshield hinged up and he climbed out. I didn't get a chance to talk to him unfortunately but I'd love to have something like this. Having the ability to pedal assist is great and having the battery power is an added plus. Can someone fill me in on the faring info? Most of my searching leads me to a DIY project with fiberglass.

Steintrikes makes their own velo for both the Mad Max amd Mungo but not cheaply! Around 4 grand for the velo cover and about the same for the full-suspension trikes.

Velocity Velos http://velocityvelos.com has a kit that fits Terra Trikes and most other brands. There is a company in BC that makes a velo kit called the Borealis that fits Trice trikes. Just Google Borealis.

If you're trying to do it on a budget, something like John Tetz zotefoam or a coroplast fairing are fairly cheap and easy to make. Plus it's easy to tweak and modify, and you won't be as sad if it gets scratched :) I actually designed/build a composite trike streamlined fairing called the "pod". It resides at Calfee Designs and he could build one for you if you want. I'll try to dig up some pics if you are interested.

What you probably saw was a full blown velomobile. The better ones aren't just a fairing, they are a vehicle designed from the ground up as a three wheeled pedal vehicle. Full bodies with the design criteria being either everyday utility/weather protection or speed. The 24 hour race record for a pedal vehicle I think is now held by a German gentleman in his mid 50's that was riding a production velomobile. He AVERAGED about 35mph for 24 hours. That blows me away even more than the streamliners hitting 80+ mph at the end of a 5 mile course. In Europe where they are the most popular almost no one runs an electric assist, on the other hand some carry drag chutes to help keep the speed down on long descents. Here in the US quite a few run electric assist units, really helps flatten out the hills for the riders that aren't in the greatest shape or that don't want to get all sweaty commuting.

The drag chutes that most of the European riders use for hills is because they still use drum brakes and they won't hold on a real hill. :D

Or how 'bout over 55mph for an hour! We're talking ~300 watts to go 50+mph.

This is Fast Freddy setting a new world record at 53miles in one hour. That's my bike and I'm holding the camera! Full disclosure, we "acquired" this bike, a Varna Diablo, from Georgio Georgiev the genius behind it. I made some custom parts and polished the sh*t out of it ;p

I actually built two but cannot find the completed pics anywhere :( Here's what I got. The idea is it's SUPER GENERIC. You can run the roadster version with or without a lycra skirt. Or you could fab a coupe top for maximum aero and environmental protection. One of my customers used a blue sky windshield (http://www.blueskydsn.com/speeder.html) and it actually fit quite well.

Craig Calfee would be happy to make one to your specs.
