Opinion on this FS frame

Postby shock » Fri Apr 27, 2012 11:11 am

The price was right... free! My local bike store gave it to me for free. I was interested because the rear triangle is steel. Obviously it needs to be rebuilt with a new fork, and some flat back paint, but wanted some insight from others if this frame, suspension design, and drop outs would be worth building into an ebike? The dropouts look likd I could make it single speed too! Thoughts??

No reason why not..New forks, yes, and already a reasonable amount of space in the frame for battery pack.
Drop out area looks flat enough t easily make some torque plates to bolt in there

That really depends on how much abuse you plan on giving it. For street I'm sure it's fine. Not sure it would last a year for me on trails though. I usually stick with chome-moly if steel and a quality frame if aluminum for trail riding. My plain steel frame broke from jumping and the added weight from ebikes. If the bike itself looks more solid then the average department store stuff, you might faire better. For me the time involved in the build process, I usually start on a frame I can depend on. For plain street riding almost any frame can be made to work. Stopping is a different issue

I already have the motobcane which has shown it can take some abuse, but I havd an extra geared hub sitting around looking for a bike! The thing that puzzles me about this frame is the lack of pivot point on the rear risers. But being that it is steel I can weld away! I also like how flat the drop outs are as I can fashion a pinch torque arm like dogman if I do a high power build. But yeah I've never heard of this brand of bike so before I throw a bunch of money and elbow grease at this, I'm wondering if its worthwhile or just junk. It will be a street cruiser, not off road.

it looks like the same design as my ebike so I would recommend upgrading the rear suspension and the front fork,
also, can you put on a disc brake on the rear? if you can then i think its worth giving it a try

In stock form, No. But disk caliper mounting provisions can be welded on :-)

Just checked it out and all the pivot points are solid. The shock (front and rear) can use help though!

It's not clear from the photo whether your steerer tube is 1" or 1 1/8". If it's 1", you choice of forks will be very limited and a worthwhile upgrade probably won't be possible. The rest looks pretty good.

The Falcon EV bag will fit in there. You will just have to add a partition so the shock linkage won't wear though it.

personally I dont think Falcon EV bag would fit in there since the triangle you've got seems smaller than miine.... plus your bike do have the 4 link system which seems little larger than mine too.
Btw, If i were you I would change the BB and rear kick stand. The BB will be rusty inside so give it a nice clean or upgrade. The kick stand wont be able to support the weight of whatever you need as a ebike.
I'm looking forward to see where this build is going! have you got any idea what you're going to add to this?

Ok offering in the wallmart bike class. the 4 bar link rear suspension will make the bike ride tolerable on street and decent trails. No real likely that a rear shock upgrade is possible due to clearance issues with a larger, real rear shock body.

Comparable to a genesis or mongoose blackcomb. Definitely a keeper at my favorite price, free to 20 bucks.

?? I dont get why its not possible to upgrade them...I've got similar ones which I've upgraded to air as well as increasing eye to eye length which by all mean I did screw around with the geometry but I also upgraded the from suspension which made the whole bike taller but same angle.

Maybe my problem is a mongoose thing. I couldn't get a short stroke air shock to fit two different cheap mongoose frames.

The mounts were close enough to the frame tube, that the wider air shock body would not clear the frame tube, and still line up with the bolt holes.

Would LOVE to be able to dump the pogo stick rear shock on my mongoose blackcomb.

I've upgraded the front fork to a nice one, better than you see in this pic. but I'm stuck with this cheap spring shock.

I started pulling it apart, oiling and cleaning. Ill measure the fork stem. Would a 1" be able to convert to 1.125" via headset bearings? Here's a closeup of the dropout.
