Thanks. The same technique was used here, back around 100 to 150 years ago, with guns that looked very much like small cannons! Here's a video of using a duck punt here:
http://youtu.be/pwEwF7VAaEAMy guess is that the tradition of using punt guns just crossed the Atlantic at some point in the last 200 years or so, as the boat designs look very similar. Punt guns are rare, now, and probably banned as being a bit unsporting in many areas, but the old punts have seen a revival recently, as people have realised that they can be sailed quite well in shallow water. This is the type of duck punt I'm building:
http://www.duckpunt.org.uk/ although mine is built from epoxy glass over 10mm thick foam, so is a fraction of the weight of the traditional duck punts. I'm planning on sailing it after the cordless tool competition, as it looks like a fair bit of fun.
