Can you use the C.A. to work out health of battery?

Postby alfantastic » Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:01 am

I'm no expert, but I guess that the voltage drop under load is proportionately related to current draw under load.
Could I use the info on my Cycle Analyst to detect the health of my battery?

For example, I am running a Ping 15Ah (48v), which shows around 52v fully charged and left to settle for an hour off the charger.
On a torture test run, the C.A. shows 28.6 amp max. and 49.4 voltage min.
Could I use this data to detect any potential problems with the battery, or am I waffling shite?

You could use that information as a benchmark to compare with future results to decide if the battery is degraded, sure. Alone, those numbers mean nothing for considering the health of the battery.

Another, and probably more usefull metric available from the C.A. is the acutual measured capacity with what the battery is rated for. Run the battery down to its minimum and read how many amps/watts have been used. An unhealthy battery will likely have deminished capacity.
Buy the ticket, take the ride.

The CA could monitor batteries at cell level, that would be a useful feature. Adding balance connectors and some code to the next version... Would be good for us who don't want to use a BMS, to integrate cell monitoring to the CA.
Make it fool-proof, and I will make a better fool.

Well, those numbers are pretty close to normal for a less than new ping. So I don't see any red flags there myself. A newer one would hold the charge better, a really new one only dropping to about 56v. But once riding, you'd see about 52v not under load for most of the ride.

I'd say your sag under that load is not bad, so that's a pretty good indicator it's not having any real trouble. More likely the data a CA can best give you to estimate your battery health is capacity. My 15 ah ping with a few hundred cycles on it is just starting to show it's age, and now gives 14 ah to the bms cutoff. When new, it gave closer to 15 ah. So if you come up a full 5 ah short, then that would indicate one cell that died in at least one cell group.
THE LIPO RULES. NEVER ABOVE 4.3V NEVER BELOW 2.7V DON'T PUNCTURE

Ideal charging /discharging range for Lipo, 3.65v minimum 4.1v maximum

See battery technology section, FAQ thread at the top of the page for lipo noob info.
