Where to get hs3540?

Postby Rahlo12 » Wed Jun 13, 2012 9:51 am

Hi,

I'm new to the world of e-bikes and endless sphere, but after a month of small scale researching I think I have got the basics and am ready to start building my bike.
I've read a lot about the HS3540 and it seems like a good high performance motor, and I think its the successor of the 5304 crystatyle motor which was apparently very widely used.
Anyway, as I said I am new, and therefore don't know where exactly to buy the motor for the best price possible.

http://www.ebikedeal.com/crystalyte.htm

So far this is the best price and website I have seen that sells the HS3540, but I'm not sure whether its reliable and the cheapest place to get it etc.
I'd be very thankful if someone where to help me on this and possible confirm the website, or maybe suggest a better option.

thanks.

Welcome to the forum.
I bought from a member here named Methods who has a website methtek.com He's great to deal with. He took 1 day longer than he said he would for shipping so immediately emailed me saying he's going to OVERNIGHT it to me, which was $55 out of his pocket. You can't beat service like that. I told him it wasn't necessary as I was not in a hurry to get the motor, so instead he threw in 2 free throttles. His prices are very good, but even if I found a price that was a little better I'd still buy from Methods.
I haven't heard reviews on ebikedeals yet, but the prices look good!
Good luck and welcome.

A lot would depend on where in the world you live. Grin Cyclery is a damn good source, particularly for north america. But they do ship worldwide.
THE LIPO RULES. NEVER ABOVE 4.3V NEVER BELOW 2.7V DON'T PUNCTURE

Ideal charging /discharging range for Lipo, 3.65v minimum 4.1v maximum

The best pricing i have seen on the crystalyte and bmc motors is from Ilia at http://www.ebikessf.com ...also a respected forum member and a good guy to deal with.

I just went to the grand opening of his store front here in San Francisco. If you happen to be local this guy is ideal. Also he ships anywhere. I am kind of spoiled by his pricing and its kind of staggering whenever i get a quote from someone else. That much??

He gets by on such a low mark up and still manages to have a physical location...and now a retail location. Also offers great warranty support and pre-sales support.

I was lucky to find him on the sphere and since have bought 6 hub motors from him.

Thanks for all of the websites. Much appreciated. I'm located in London if that helps. I don't think there are any good local shops around here, so it would have to be over the internet with postage fees applied. Bearing that in mind, would one of those three websites be the best? Thanks

I'm not aware of any UK sellers mate.
Drop them all an email for a price on the motor and controller. You going sensored or sensorless? You can also then compare the costs including shipping and possible taxes against the prices on the Crystalyte Europe site...

Hi Rahlo12,

I'm down in Guernsey, I've bought all my stuff from Crystalyte Europe. They're not the cheapest, don't really like paying 21% tax!
..but they do provide a good service and they do speak English.

You can get the motors cheaper elsewhere, but when you add in shipping to the UK you don't really end up saving anything over going straight to Crystalyte Europe.

Cheers,
Kudos

Now that you mention the price, i see they rised prices from 225€ to 260€.
It is still my best choice due to shippings fee and custom duties, maybe in your case is different.

If you buy an HS3540 from Crystalyte europe it will not have Halls fitted, getting one from Methods or ebike.ca may be a little more expensive but the motor will have been fitted with halls and have had the wiring exit improved. Personaly i would always go for a motor fitted with hall sensors, i only mentioned this as it has not been mentioned above and i didnt know if your where aware of this. I am in the uk, the last one i bought i got from ebikes.ca along with a controller and CA, the CA came with the controllers r-shunt value pre-programmed in. There are advantages to paying to that bit extra, it depends what your priorities are though.

ebikes.ca

i bought my first from methods. not sure he's selling them anymore.

i bought my second from ebikessf.com, the only place i know of that you can get a temp sensor preinstalled, and lifetime guarantee on a wheel build (in a some great rims). :!:

ebikedeal is certainly the cheapest, and offers lacing in whatever wheels with washers. i'd recommend this, or get ready for multiple spoke failure, pretty much no matter how you ride after a couple months... i've gone through countless spokes over 3 hard years and despite what others have said believed 12g spokes better than 13 or 14g spokes, until this entertaining thread.

are you planning on drilling holes to vent it or fill it with oil? it's got a rust problem if you ride it in the rain, and perhaps even if you don't ride it in the rain.

ps. welcome to ES!

thanks everyone.

I think I will have to look into the postage details of each one of these websites you have recommended. The various taxes that could be applied also seems quite annoying as well. some websites do have additions services and help that could be useful. I'm definately looking for quality in the motor as I don't want to have many problems with it for the first 6 months as I am still kinda a novice. Ebidedeal.com seems to have the cheepest motors, but then again price isn't everything!

GcinDC. I never realised spokes broke so easily. I though I had quite a stong rim and set of spokes, but looking at that thread I see I should be slightly cautious. I'd like to use my own rim and wheel on my e-bike, and don't really want to purchace a motor with a rim, however I will certainly buy some washers now and when I lace the motor, everything concerning the spokes should be fine. Thank you.

ok, but make sure it's DH quality, much stronger than regular bicycle rim, and has 36 holes.. and you get spokes that are basically 12g at the hub motor side, cause that's what the hs3540 fits, unlike the 9C and other motors, for which 13/14 are fine...

i'd seriously consider having it professionally built. there are plenty of other things to DIY as you get an ebike going.

I brought my HS3540 set up from Crystalyte Europe, bit peeved about the 21% tax, but an easy and seamless transaction, and were very helpful.

This place is like all sold-out,which wasn't just a month earlier..Buy a couple cheap SLA's and start rolling baby

Thanks,

I've emailed most of these vendors, and have come to the conclusion that although there are vendors which sell the motor at a competitive price, the shipping prices realy ruin this with shipping prices of $100+! not including taxes etc.!

As crystatlye europe does offer halls in there motors, and there shipping costs are relatively cheap I think I will go with them. Thank you everyone from euorpe who suggested it and others who suggested the other websites,

Much appreciated :D

Unfortunately crystalyte europe are on holiday until the 30th and aren't taking any more orders, so I've decided to do with ebikedeal.com, as its the cheapest and offers halls installed in the motor as well. It seems silly to pay more for the exact same product from some of the more well-known vendors and works out about 30 quid cheaper than crystalyte europe!

thanks for all the help

Hi everyone,

Its been a little while now, and I've nearly completed my bike. however, there is still two things to do, one of which is to lace my HS3540 motor into my rim. I live in streatham, which is in south London, does anyone know any good shops for lacing anywhere in Lodon? Its just that most bike shops round here have no experience of dealing with motors, and I don't want a slap dash job for something as crucial as this.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
