Trials cranks are available in modern splines including some PF bottom brackets and a few people have made adapters to mount splined freewheels on DM cranks.
It's not rocket surgery.
Sur-rons ARE motorbikes. "Bicycles" with +1500w ARE motorbikes. Trail access is a very real issue that isn't helped by building motorbikes that can pass as bicycles.
Around town I don't personally care, but at places set aside for MTBs I absolutely understand why there are lines in the sand...
Honestly you can either pick between fast-ish production with the first units being not fully developed (CYC) or a much slower development with what are hopefully very refined systems (Lightest).
Anything that negatively impacts traction and is fiddly to setup isn't going to fly in the commercial realm.
Personally I see the integration of gearboxes and motors in the frame as the big leap for EMTBs. Electric motors need lots of reduction but not lots of gears, humans can turn pretty high...
I think EMTBs can get lighter through better battery tech and possibly some motor optimization. 40-45# has been done in the DIY world by keeping power low enough to be an assist rather than offering Olympic sprinter power on top of what the human produces.
