Trials cranks are available in modern splines including some PF bottom brackets and a few people have made adapters to mount splined freewheels on DM cranks. It's not rocket surgery.

On a ground up build with what you're trying to do I'd use an OSET hub and forget about the freehub. That'll let you run regen as well.

Honestly you can either pick between fast-ish production with the first units being not fully developed (CYC) or a much slower development with what are hopefully very refined systems (Lightest).

Anything that negatively impacts traction and is fiddly to setup isn't going to fly in the commercial realm. Personally I see the integration of gearboxes and motors in the frame as the big leap for EMTBs. Electric motors need lots of reduction but not lots of gears, humans can turn pretty high...

The observed trials world offers a variety of much higher quality freewheeling cranks in a range of lengths and bottom bracket types.

I think EMTBs can get lighter through better battery tech and possibly some motor optimization. 40-45# has been done in the DIY world by keeping power low enough to be an assist rather than offering Olympic sprinter power on top of what the human produces.

Heavy and expensive, even the very best factory EMTBs are just too damn heavy.

Yes. But compare that with getting the tools to machine 6061 or to produce carbon fiber parts in the traditional way, costs are similar or a bit less.

Continuous fiber filament printing I believe can produce parts with almost the strength of aluminum now. Prices are coming way down too.
