I did a little trimming in exactly the same way on my 2004 kona stinky and 2010 giant anthem.

Go test ride some bikes. A good bike with geometry that fits you is a hell of a lot easier to ride and pedal. If its good to ride without a motor, it'll be even better with a motor. Disk brakes are a bloody good idea, and hydraulic is better than cable almost always.
