Thanks for explaining. I took the battery case off and found the problem was a wire that had come lose from the fuse. Fixed this and everything was working fine. I'll use your advice on checking the first battery because I couldn't see any issues with the wires or connections.

After running for over an hour everything looked fine. I unplugged and took the lamp apart to see inside and I can see no damage to anything so I think it's good to go.
