Filling Air Gaps inside Stator Slots

They do exactly that for fully-immersed underwater outrunner motors. Pot the stator in epoxy making it one solid block or cylinder, put stainless or ideally ceramic bearings in, throw it back together. Some people also pack the space between bearings with grease, but that adds a lot of...

Definitive Tests on the Heating and Cooling of Hub Motors

Here's a question - I have some Maytech 6396 outrunners on a mountainboard that are sealed with a 3rd skirt bearing around the open end of the can. As such, they have no air circulation path as far as I'm aware. While they are 0.2mm lamination stators and have good winding lays, they can still...

Big Bad FLAMPA MTB - LEOPARD 8072, Trampa Deck, Flame Trucks

Hey @nowind - How thick are the lamination layers on the stator for those Leopard's? I know all the Maytech motors are 0.2mm and many of the cheaper/no-name motors tend to be more like 0.35mm or even 0.5mm; some of the really high end go down as thin as 0.15mm for the highest end competition...

Tank Bike - (Previously: Yet Another Genesis)

For what it's worth, I now have a working electric skateboard! This was a one-month build, as a limitation for myself, and I completed it beginning to end within that timeframe. A month after that, I've actually learned how to ride, and am now mostly successful at carving down the street at...

Solderless weldless 36V and 74V batteries could do over 200A

I'll likely be buying them in batches of 100 cells over the course of a couple months. While cycle life will be different, I'm hoping it won't be different enough to cause too many problems once fully "stocked"

Solderless weldless 36V and 74V batteries could do over 200A

Any issues with using say an 8P module with say, 4P worth of cells and upgrading to higher cell counts as more disposable money is available? Will tension stay the same for the most part?

    Thin-lamination outrunners?

So I've been doing a lot of research into components to strap to my longboard and asked a lot of ebay/aliexpress sellers for lamination thickness specs. So far only one aliexpress seller was able to provide any info, and it looks like the "fatjay" brand outrunners (at least in 63xx sizes) use...

Tank Bike - (Previously: Yet Another Genesis)

Thank you sir! It's an honor to hear that from you. In retrospect, I'd have been far happier by now building a ready-made but flawed (in my mind) kit and incrementally upgrading rather than obsessively over-engineering everything to have orders of magnitude too high a safety factor, but...

Tank Bike - (Previously: Yet Another Genesis)

SOON! The bike is 99% built but I haven't gotten around to wiring up phase and hall wires, mounting the controller, programming, or buying a battery. The lack of battery is the main impediment, and like many stalled projects, revolves around lack of funds. In the meantime, I may throw together...

Tank Bike - (Previously: Yet Another Genesis)

Well, it's been years, and I now have the problem that time is more valuable than money. So I've purchased a "Tank" ebike frame, (Similar price class to the EEB frame, though heavier by a noticeable amount,) and am currently modifying it for my tastes. (Replacing swing arm rubber bonded...

    IP67-spec throttles?

Question - Most of the electric throttle solutions I've seen are pretty cheaply made, and if left in heavy rain will likely saturate. Does anyone make a fully waterproof sealed throttle assembly?

Why do hub motors use the older freewheel hub?

Also you lose power efficiency below 13t sprockets. 11t is nice, but does make you have to pedal harder.

Why do hub motors use the older freewheel hub?

The whole point of more gears is added efficiency when accelerating. Just like a car with 3 gears vs. one with 6+; the one with 6 gears will get better gas milage in-town where there are lots of stops and starts. A car with a 3-speed vs. a 6 speed will do the same gas milage in top gear, but...

    Amberwolf gratitude thread

Thank you for your efforts. This forum has been a great resource and one of the best aspects was that I didn't see any spam and very few off topic postings. I hope you have something satisfying planned for all that extra time you'll have now. Take care.

Why do hub motors use the older freewheel hub?

Honestly the main reason is shaft diameter. Cassettes require bearings inside to support the clutch assembly and that eats into the maximum thickness the shaft can be coming out of the motor on the gear side. We're talking 14mm max, 15 if you want to modify the cassette to almost be...

Leaf / leafmotor / leafbike high efficiency 1500w motor

ABritInNY For what it's worth, I'm confident in my tooling now to be able to cut a new axle. If you manage to snap another one, let me know. I have a "stock" shaft for reference, though it's designed for the larger (undriven) side cover with round brake rotor mount. Upside is it's thicker...

    Ferrite as a stator material?

Just curious, (and it's probably been asked before,) why is ferrite not used more often as a stator core material? For that matter, why not cast a composite out of epoxy or something that has the right ratio of iron and other materials required rather than cut super-thin laminate stacks and...

Leaf / leafmotor / leafbike high efficiency 1500w motor

THANK YOU for the clarification; I've been saying this for a while, but no one ever listens to me, and there's always more newbies to add comments. The other fun variable is some manufacturers use different size wire for different windings, so some windings can take more current-per-wire before...

No worries, just was checking. :) I'll let you guys know if I ever get my motor rebuilt what I'm able to reach on my 5T. :P ...Current status of my replacement shaft design... I got a few dimensions incorrect due to material deflection, but I have everything set up correctly now, and...

Leaf / leafmotor / leafbike high efficiency 1500w motor

That IS a good point... You literally will not be able to get an extra wire into the harness if you want to add a temp sensor later on, but you'll have to replace the sensor internally if you want it to play nice with a CA3. Either way, pay the extra money for a version 3; better features by far.

Leaf / leafmotor / leafbike high efficiency 1500w motor

Looks like you've got it all right so far. 5T seems to have the most copper fill so that's good, temp sensor doesn't cost anything to add in but they don't have a history of working with CA's so you'd have to swap it out anyway. Everything else looks good to me. Sounds like a solid plan for a...
