Best RC motor for lightweight utility bike build

PS... My comments reflect the opinions of a person who has spent 35 years working in product development and design. Take a look at the Optibike 29er... A steel framed Ebike that weights 39 lbs. It has a unique BB drive with an optibike designed and made motor WITH batteries incorporated...

Best RC motor for lightweight utility bike build

Do not even consider any motor other than a Bottom Bracket motor. First of all... No hub motor works for crap on hilly terrain. They overheat, because they are under direct load, and lose efficiency. BB motors run power Thru the gearing on the rear wheel... Like your car does thru it's...

    BBSO2 & Downtube Mount battery

I have the 750... With 48v 11 ah battery from Lectric cycle... Several points should be made... First of all, you probably won't often ride it throttle only... Because you can set pedal assist such that incline is immaterial....everything feels like a gentle downhill ride. I live in...

    Bafang bbs02 / bent frame

PPS There are lots of different types of epoxy putties available... Some of the simplest have the A & B components as side by side bars of clay-like material... ( just cut across the two bars evenly and mix ). Or even with the A component wrapped cylindrically around a core of the B component...

    Bafang bbs02 / bent frame

PS- DO NOT drill into your frame to create a threaded hole. The tubing is dangerously thin everywhere except the very ends... A threaded boss like the one on my bike has to be MADE by adding enough metal to the tube to support the threads. ( if you have the frame welded by a competent...

    Bafang bbs02 / bent frame

Well... First of all... I sure hope you did not think I was recommending epoxy putty to 'repair' your cracked frame... The damage shown in your photos can not be fixed with anything short of stripping the paint and TIG welding new aluminum. The epoxy trick is a way to fairly quickly make add...

    Bafang bbs02 / bent frame

To make one... First, set your frame upside down in a repair stand... Or however you can. Loosen the Bafang if it's already tightened. You want to either apply Vaseline to the surface of the downtube... And the Bafang's rubber thrust plate... Or cover one or both surfaces with Saran wrap...

    Bafang bbs02 / bent frame

Despite this,,because of the softness of aluminum versus the Bafang's iffy steel clamp design... The motor still works it's way loose over time and I need to regularly tighten it. For this reason, I am currently designing a similar, tightly fitting thrust spacer that will wedge between the...

    Bafang bbs02 / bent frame

Here's a shot of my Bafang where it meets the downtube. The Ajax had an existing boss for a cable guide in this location, so I designed the Spacer to attach with a countersunk screw at this location... You can see that the spacer fits the contour of the down tube, and rests against the entire...

    Bafang bbs02 / bent frame

PS- you can also run the controler cable between the motor housing and the BB... And folks also sometimes see this controller cable get damaged by the motor whacking against it repeatedly. In the previous post I suggest modeling an epoxy putty spacer to spread the load between motor and...

    Bafang bbs02 / bent frame

Aluminum frames can be problematic. The Bafang needs to be held as tight to the downtube as possible when you torque down the clamp that holds in in place... This clamp is steel and has raised ridges that are MEANT to dimple the Edge of the Bottom bracket, so that the Bafang won't shift...

    Bafang or 8fun brand

Chinese attach no superstitious significance to 'infinity'... But they do to the ordinal numbers... e.g.- westerners getting cellphones in China are offered huge long lists of phonE numbers with lots of '4's in them...because they can't Give those numbers away to Chinese customers. 4 means...

    I used to want a fast e-bike, but now I want a . . .

Relatively new to ebiking... What I wanted in an ebike? I wanted perfection. I wanted the torque to climb 20% grades on motor alone... and the ability to ride easily at 15-20...AND the ability to top 35 if I should need to to negotiate traffic or escape a dicey situation. I wanted it to look...

Framebuilder with interest in e-bikes and questions

Framebuilding is a pretty complex subject. The geometry of a bike frame and its fork determine everything about how the bike will handle, and how comfortable it will be to ride. Fork offset and head tube angle determine 'trail' the difference between where the tire touches the ground and where...

    Thank you everyone

The option of grinding the BB shell is only if you want to put a 68mm Bafang unit in a 76mm BB... You can grind off of either side...but you HAVE to get it dead straight and perpendicular to the BB centerline. And you have to have the chainstay clearance for the reduction gear housing to not...

    Thank you everyone

I am also a little fussy... Because my BB is aluminum... And the bafang's fixing clamp is a steel plate with some small ridges stamped into one side. It's pretty easy for the motor torque to smear the aluminum BB shell and then the Bafang will sag under its own weight... And counter rotate...

    8Fun BBS01 Mid-Drive usable gear range ?

I, too run the Alfine 8. I too pull the brake lever just enough to cut motor power prior to shifting... ( before actual pad contact with rotor- I keep one brake just a little looser for this purpose ) I don't roll off throttle, because I am almost always riding pedal assist and I stop...

    New Bafang Crank-Drives

Bafang comes with a dish offset steel chainring that is 48t. Lectric-cycles sells milled aluminum adapters for mounting 4 point and 5 point chainrings... But they will shift your chainline outward from 50mm to 54 or more... So for some rear derailuer rigs that might be problematic for your low...

Bafang BBS02 - What else do I need?

The Bafang kit I bought has no separate controller. I bought it with a 48v 11ah battery that is in a rigid plastic lockable mount. The motor has several cables coming out of it. One plugs into the battery mount. One runs to the wheel sensor, and the other runs up the downtube to split I to the...

Framebuilder with interest in e-bikes and questions

This is not a long tail... But I built it on a Spot Ajax to run like a regular bike, cruise pretty easy at 25, and carry panniers full of groceries. I would avoid drop bars... It doesn't buy you anything in speed... And you're more alert in traffic at higher speed with your head high. This one...

    Thank you everyone

Lectric cycles sells a set of two socket wrenches that fit both the lock rings that fix the Bafang in place... Although if you're an old time bike mechanic like me, you can tighten the inner lockring with a stout flat screwdriver and a mallet... Just be extra careful about your paint job. (...

    New Bafang Crank-Drives

The only issue I see is with the down tube swinging parallel to the ground. The Bafang hangs below the Bracket...swiveled forward against the down tube. On the bike pictured, the motor will hang pretty low because of the angle of the down tube. This is not an issue except if you plan to hop...

    New Bafang Crank-Drives

Sure that's plastic? I just got a set of new lock rings and the black over ring is aluminum. It should take a standard shimano BB spanner... But its only aluminum... So not too tight.

Ready to buy a mid drive, questions! Bafang-GNG-Cyclone

As far as how long I can ride uphill... I don't know. With the gear I bought from LectricCycle, I have yet to overheat the motor. And yet to run out of battery. I think its a well balanced battery motor combo in terms of drain. To get from waterfront back to my house I climb 545 vertical feet...
