Simulation is significantly different than actual results

Now that my controller is repaired, I am back with new test results. Independence day morning, I went back to my test hill with the thought of running two experiments so that we can see the difference between a cool-ish and a warm motor as well as to compare more accurately with the Grin Tech...

Yes, the "A" limit flag shows that the CAV3 is limiting the current during the climb. The CA "thinks" the current limit is set to 25A but the actual current limit could be more on the order of 15A. Being a novice, not accustom to how my bike ought to perform under the conditions described in...

Agreed. And they have all been very informative. Agreed, and not only what the CA showed but, for those folowing along at home, the CA was limiting the current at somthing significantly lower than 25A.

Correct! There was a rat lurking. Humm...I'm looking for just the right smiley for this situation... Nope, can't find it. Must go to Youtube for this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBEn3a4TIUw Dogman dan is the man! Hang around and I will tell you a tail... A rat tail. The build When I...

    No ebikes allowed?

A Google search found this blog posting http://forums.roadbikereview.com/northern-california/mountain-view-bay-trail-15mph-speed-limit-345036.html There is a speed limit posted on the Bay Trail, 15 mph. Likely the very trial I am talking about in OP.

    No ebikes allowed?

This is a sign at a bike trail head. It's in California. You can see the location if you browse to this web address - https://www.google.com/maps/@37.44936,-122.115583,3a,15y,175.1h,84.31t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sJksC5ilAOHZbXTebyxJxkw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 It says "No motorized bicycles". An ebike...

That's a good exercise Alan B. So, in your scenario you are keeping slope, mass and battery voltage as I have previously stated? Are these two statements in conflict with each other? True - Power, if it is all producing heat, is (I^2)*R. Heat is the integration power over time minus heat...

That's good advice generally but I don't see these temperatures when I ride normally. Before this, I had not seen temperatures above 65C. This was a science experiment. You are correct. I did hit thermal cutback, 90C, but not until after I started to pick up speed due to a slight decrease in...

This is awesome! Thanks guys! Y'all schooled me. Got me crackin' open my college physics book. Love it! I'll go back to my last post and confess my errors.

Magic Pie 4 vs Crystalite HS3540

I have dealt with both companies. Based on customer service and technical knowledge, ebikes.ca wins hands down :!: The owner of ebikes.ca is justin_le. You have to listen to the 3 hour interview with Justin on the ebike nerd cast. You will then know what kind of guy Justin is and want to do...

Thanks teklektik! You put a lot of work into that. :D It is helpful to visualize what is happening when the controller is current limiting. Is anyone able to locate a spec sheet for the 25A IRFB4110 Controller (Grinfinion), so that we can know what the current limit is? I guess your dashed...

dogman, that's good advice to check my phase connection. What is your recommendation as to how I could troubleshoot that? It is my belief that when doing an experiment one must record as much about the conditions as possible. When approaching unknown territory one does not know even what...

Best bag for controller? Or just mount it naked?

Mount it naked. I found that the area between the down tube and the cargo rack was a good place to mount my controller. It actually screws on to the two metal pieces that connect the cargo rack to the down tube. And I think this connection to something solid could help sink some of the heat out.

From Russel I've set my current limit on the CA to 25A to protect the batteries. I was thinking though, what would happen if I were to change to a 40A IRFB4110 controller but leaving my current limit to 25A. GT said I would like to see a spec sheet to see what is going on there. But to my...

Thanks for the replies so far. The experiences that Russell mentioned with different motors is helpful. And thanks for the stab at saturation effects by amberwolf. I will go have a look at the Motor Technology subforum. The purpose of my post is to understand the physics and math of the...

This started as an email to ebikes.ca, who from here on I will refer to as GT, short for Grin Tech. GT graciously turned around a response in just a few hours. :) The answer is satisfactory but I would like to go into a few details on this subject and thought it would be beneficial to make this...

    The ultimate onboard charging solution

That makes perfect sense. (... see what I did there?) And the high side of the charger taps to the high side of the battery inside the controller I assume. Do you bypass the switch so that you can charge whether or not you have the CA powered? Do you run everything through the shunt (as in...

    The ultimate onboard charging solution

Grindz145, I had noticed in your trek videos that you were reading charge current on your CA. I had figured that you must somehow be sending the charge current through the controller shunt. (My charger connects directly to the battery.) In an effort to find out more I found this thread and saw...

    Minimum Voltage for EM3EV Battery?

I have these same batteries as well. I am setting up my CA. What Cell Chemistry do I select? I believe the battery chemistry on the ICR18650-22P is LiNiMnCoO2. It must discharge similar to one of the chemistries that can be selected on the CAV3 but which one?

Widest hub/rim motor for 10" diam wheel

Have you found a rim and hub combination that you want? I laced my Crystalyte motor into a 26” rim that I ordered off of Amazon. After the learning curve it was not as difficult as I thought it would be. This video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V31UHgrV8Zc was quite helpful. Look at the...
