Full suspension mountain bike Friction Drive

OK, scratch "silicone" from my previous comment and substitute "polyurethane" in its place. As skateboard wheels are made from polyurethane, setting a 10mm ring to bond around a motor's cylinder might achieve a similar level of grip without the bulk of adding an extra wheel drive to the mechanism.

Full suspension mountain bike Friction Drive

In terms of grip and knobbly tyres, might it be worth exploring the opposite end of the scale to sandpaper?.. I wonder if a flat-surfaced low-shore silicone ring moulded around the motor cylinder - and having, say, a 10-15mm thickness - might impress into the harder rubber of the tyre, when...

Kepler Friction drive comes of age.

I found ebay had a lot of them - for around the $4 mark.

Kepler Friction drive comes of age.

Thanks for this Kepler - it's very useful. I've given up on the servo-tester hack and have an Arduino Nano board on order.

Kepler Friction drive comes of age.

Thanks for your suggestions, Kepler. Yes it is a hall-effect throttle. I didn't have any luck following your wiring scheme... pic below (sorry for poor quality - the green wire from throttle going to the centre pin of where the pot used to be). I firstly hooked up the servo tester - with its...

Kepler Friction drive comes of age.

I've also acquired a bluetooth card to add to my Kepler Friction drive bike. It works... but it uses the ports currently assigned to my twist throttle. I've tried rerouting the throttle into the Vesc through the servo cables using the hacked servo tester method (as shown here...

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

Haha - thanks Kelper. The stealthiness of your design is why I opted for it. I've also stripped all the original front and back derailleur gear stuff off the bike and replaced it with a Sturmey Archer 5 speed IGH - adding to the understatement, I think :) BTW - I had some BB shell slippage...

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

Thanks for the BLDC info Kelper. I followed the instructions and below is the screenshot after doing so - not identical to yours but it looks pretty close to me. I changed the Lambda to 10A, but couldn't work out how to "spin up" for this entry - I so just clicked on "Write configuration" and...

Kepler Friction drive comes of age.

I’ve managed to run the three cables from a saddlebag-mounted battery through my aluminium seat post and seat tube to get the 'stealthy' bike set-up. I did this by using thinner 12AWG PTFE wire around the inside of BB Shell and out through a 10mm hole in its base. I added an eccentric BB to...

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

Thanks for the tips. I pulled the motor up to just touch the tyre and that worked. I also added a spacer washer to the top locking screw - as this increased the screw's shaft diameter enough to stop the motor rising up so far it scraped on the bottom of the kickstand plate. Both the top and...

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

I'm having problems getting the friction drive to engage. On twisting the throttle, the motor moves into contact with the tyre - as it should - but then it immediately drops back a little so that the tyre is no longer being driven. This happens even though the motor continues spinning at the...

Thanks for the info. Mine's wired like that too now and the throttle's working as it should.

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

John - I'm wiring everything together... which is going well. I have a throttle + the appropriate Vesc connector for it (as discussed a couple of pages back). However, my Vesc board has a row of seven pins rather than the six shown in the set-up manual image. Can you direct my towards which...

    9.4Ah €350. In the UK it's about £240. It's a good price I think.

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

LOL - I did wonder if it could be that straightforward :) ... and then I got lost thinking if cells in parallel/Ah, etc, would affect the input values. This is the battery I'm likely to get. 9.4Ah at 36v would be an ideal pack for me. Husqvarna are respected brand in the power tools world. This...

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

I've got all the components together for building this bike except for the battery - which I've whittled down to two 36v power tool Li-ion options. I've been looking through Youtube tutorials on the BLDC Tool and have a question about inputs: How do I determine the voltages to enter into...

TheEBikeNinja - any tips on getting this to work (wiring, VESC calibration etc)? I'm planning to do the same. Thanks.

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

I would challenge that. I've just bought the same motor from HobbyKing - for £50.78. Delivery charge in UK is £5.11. This item is available from the UK warehouse so you shouldn't be paying any import duty/admin/handling fee for a delivery to Ireland. Did you click between the "UK | GLOBAL"...

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

I've just acquired a secondhand 'Specialized Globe' hybrid bike for this friction drive. The BB is British at 68mm width, but it has a screw-in sealed cartridge fitting rather than the cup and cone type. Will I have to convert it to cup and cone to attach the drive unit?.. it doesn't look as if...

I don't know how thick the can metal on the motor is, but I was wondering about doing some creative light scoring with a dremel and a cut-off disc. My bracket arrived here in the UK yesterday BTW :D

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

I was recently helping a friend with some building work and had the idea that the rubber grip-gloves I was wearing might provide a workable solution for using this setup in wet conditions. The gloves have a thin rubber area with a fine nobbled pattern to its surface. Perhaps a 20mm wide (x can...

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

Thanks for the tips. One option I'm looking at is getting one of these Milwaukee 28v/5Ah powerpacks to use with the bracket. It's not the greatest capacity, but city commutes is my main priority. I'm also planning a Bafang BBS01 build and it'd be useful to have a battery (or two linked together)...

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

I'm awaiting delivery of one of the brackets here in the UK. Following this thread, I feel pretty confident about putting all the components together and the mechanics of attaching the device to the BB etc. The one thing I'm unsure about is the batteries. I'm tempted by the various HK LiPo...

Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

Looking good! I wonder if the end of the swingarm could hold a further pivoting plate creating a 'T' shape? Each end of the new plate would then hold a 50mm motor (in close proximity) - providing two points of contact in rotating the tire. Presumably, this would cut the workload of each motor...
