Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

Yep! Done. I'll post the answer here too. I’d rather wait until the github release before showing schematics. Nothing is ready to be presented. Let me clean them up and such. before I do. The layout is similar to the CFOC2.

Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

No. But that's why I'm working on the CHEAP FOCer. As to have a lower cost option.

Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

Hey there it's been a while since I've posted. So yeah you can find the Little FOCer at the links below. It's what the serious focer became over time. https://www.makerspev.com/collections/frontpage https://customwheel.shop/en/ The Cheap FOCer 2 is kind of hard to make now because of the chip...

Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

https://www.makerspev.com/collections/frontpage https://customwheel.shop/ This is what I got out right now. The Little FOCer is a lot of power in a small package. Now fighting the chip shortage to keep it alive. My other more powerful designs are being released as the Tronic Series of controllers.

Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

Thanks for your on going interest! I need to update this thread. Much progress has been made The hardware of my commercial products will not be open sourced. The cheap FOCer series is my contribution to the world of open source hardware. You can find the source code of both the little FOCer and...

Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

Update: It's been a while but the project is not dead! Beta testing has been going well and I'm moving forward with a manufacturer for the Little FOCer. Getting stuff manufactured takes a while. Especially to quality check everything. I’ve got samples from the manufacturer on their way. The...

    BLDC motors mechanically coupled

Check out any VESC based controller. They can connect to each other over a CAN bus and operate multiple motors in sync. the electric skateboard builders do it all the time. eRPM between the two motors are kept within a tight difference.

BESC - beefed up VESC motor controller for high power ebikes

The Serious FOCer is lined up to have TO-247 MOSFETs but only 6 of them. Good for 150A max motor phase and not much larger than the Little FOCer. There's a different model in the works w/ 12 TO-247 MOSFETs but that's a closed topic for now.

Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

@qwerkus that's a pretty cool concept actually. I've designed the board in a way so that caps and connectors can be soldered on the opposite sides to that this kind of thing is possible.

Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

Not going for the extruded enclosure. Just the extruded heat sink like in the photo and the whole thing capped by a plastic top. You can kind of see that in the last pic from my previous post. Still a low cost solution since the heat sinks are generic (like the szomk stuff) and the plastic...

Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

Yeah it’s more compact than typical ebike controllers and the power density is far higher. It’s half the size of a cheap “1000W, 48V” controller. Still distinct from most VESC based stuff due to the through hole MOSFETs and not super expensive CNCed enclosures Dimensions are 83.8 x 72.1 x 42...

Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

Still making progress however slow it is. I've got the materials for a beta unit batch and I've been analyzing performance with different MOSFETs. So far so good. Thermal performance is good and I've tested with and without the optional fan. I'm still working on the enclosure design but it's...

Cheap FOCer 2 (Open-source, Low-cost, VESC 6 based ESC) (v0.9 release! Beta testing still ongoing)

@SRFirefox nice test and thanks for sharing! 1.39uH is a challenge. Out of curiosity, have you tried increasing the switching frequency for FOC to see if it reduces the heating? You could try bumping it up to 30 or 40kHz.

@motordriver111 I appreciate the donation but unfortunately I will not be sharing the design files. If you would like an open source controller where I share everything, please see my Cheap FOCer 2 (CFOC2) thread. All files are available on github for the CFOC2,

    Axiom: a 100kW+ motor controller

I've done this but then experienced issues when bumping the switching frequency back up for actual control. Detecting at 5kHz was good but then running at 20kHz was bad. Understood that solving this would be a large task or a large check. Makes me think about the possibility though.

    Axiom: a 100kW+ motor controller

@HighHopes or at @marcos How do you guys deal with the VESC's non-ideal behavior with slower-switching hardware? I've been able to observe in my own testing that the VESC firmware depends on hardware that switches really fast in order for the motor detection and control to perform as expected...

    XLD Brainpower 886C-6 / LCDS886 - NOT Reversible?

Ok. So your problem is that you’re not using a CFOC or CFOC2 controller.

    Axiom: a 100kW+ motor controller

Understood! Thanks for doing y’all’s part to get it into the VESC firmware. So many good contributions have come from the Axiom team. Now if we could just get the motor detection algorithm to deal with slower switching power stages better....

    Axiom: a 100kW+ motor controller

That’s a really nice feature! I’m familiar with the concept of reluctance due to the motors Tesla uses now but I didn’t know it could be exploited to improve IPM performance. Any chance this feature will make it to the main VESC firmware or will it be Axiom exclusive?

Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

I know I've given some timelines and expectations that didn't turn out to be true or were unrealistic to begin with. Here's some of the main issues contributing to the hold up on this stuff. 1. I can't do this full time. My hours have been split between my full time job (electrical engineer)...

Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

I appreciate you taking the time to read! So both...no kids + long hours. This is for sure my passion. The Little FOCer hasn't shown issues with the 2512 sense resistors and I've taken it up to 90 amps. However I did switch to size 3920 for anything larger for up to 150A. Anything more will...

Cheap FOCer 2 (Open-source, Low-cost, VESC 6 based ESC) (v0.9 release! Beta testing still ongoing)

https://github.com/shamansystems/Cheap-FOCer-2 I’m happy to finally announce the v0.9 release of the Cheap FOCer 2! Special thanks to @bj97301, @NuRxG, and @Davewesh at the esk8 builders forum for formatting the repo into something truly outstanding, much better organized, and readable by...

Cheap FOCer 2 (Open-source, Low-cost, VESC 6 based ESC) (v0.9 release! Beta testing still ongoing)

GitHub repo created and under review. It's private for now until after the review is done. This most recent rev has been working fine in my ebike with 70A motor current. Still making some firmware tweaks before release.

Serious FOCer (84V VESC 6 based controller)

@Kalzifa this controller will only do 20S as advertised. Trying for 26s would call for a complete redesign and not just changing out FETs and caps. You might be interested in galp's BESC. It is made for higher voltage
