Looking into small DIY wind turbines.

My plan is to use solar, wind, and water power to charge my EV for off-grid camping adventures. Locations will be chosen to maximize energy availability from all sources.

Looking into small DIY wind turbines.

What if I am building it for free from spare parts and materials I've collected? What if I plan to make it portable and take it with me and set it up in the ideal spot in each location I take it to? Maybe I am thinking too far out of the box for this forum.

Looking into small DIY wind turbines.

topspeed posted tons of information about his VAWT over on fieldlines.com. Not sure why he won't post the same here? Oh well. Here is the link for anyone interested: https://www.fieldlines.com/index.php/topic,149820.0.html No wonder it failed it is made from heavy plywood. And he has a weird...

Looking into small DIY wind turbines.

Thanks for the references to other sites! I will check them out. I found this site when searching for alternate energy and DIY wind turbines but all I found here was a bunch of pessimists and people who don't want to share their knowledge or help others.

Thanks for Wind Power 101. I understand the basics. I know a stiff wind when I feel it also. Why are you talking about me moving house? My whole project is for a portable wind turbine, by definition it is portable!!

Are you trying to give as little information as possible on your VAWT or what? If it's your little secret then fine, keep it to yourself. I don't understand the point of these weird photos that don't show anything and cryptic one sentence posts. You VAWT obviously has issues, too heavy for starters.

    Stationary Charging a battery

Really cool little home, Mhatayas! Thanks for sharing and glad to see it's working for you! I have been thinking of ideas for river water generators, maybe you can build one out of your bike and hub motor? Bike wheel with paddles on it using the hub motor as a generator that you can quickly swap...

    Stationary Charging a battery

One great thing about rivers is that roads, trails, and pathways are built alongside them for miles and miles and miles. If you plan your route a river is a tremendous source of energy.

Great info! Care to share any more of your experience with the VAWT or do you want to keep it to yourself?

    Stationary Charging a battery

The Waterlilly is clearly just a gimmick but an intriguing gimmick. 15W is useless IMO. With some DIY effort and a good BC river you could probably build your own water wheel generator in the 1kw range that's pretty light and compact. Now THAT's power. With your larger battery size of 1.4kwh...

Looking into small DIY wind turbines.

@topspeed it looks like your blades were built similar to RC plane wings? Balsa with a adhesive vinyl covering? Yes your pitfalls are what I am trying to avoid; blades that are too heavy, too shorty and stubby, a tower that is not stable, poorly paired generator/drivetrain. Yes H style is more...

Looking into small DIY wind turbines.

I am going to build a small scale VAWT out of composite materials with the goal of charging an EV in wilderness areas supplementing solar and standard plug-in charging. My initial plan is as follows. I would love to have comments and criticism and "I've tried that befores." Basic design based...
