updating controller with higher amp rating

This is what I understand, and is the reason I want to do this. Since there is very little difference between a 22A and a 25A, I probably should just get which ever is least expensive.

    Fast wind motor

I am happy with the G020 I have on trike No 1. It tops out around 20mph which is as fast as I go, and it climbs great. Since this is the case, I will just build another duplicate wheel for trike no 2. Going through all of these posts and the research I did only seems to validate that as the...

    Fast wind motor

Neptronix, thank you for your help. From your last post and playing around with the simulator tool, I have drawn a few conclusions: 1) With the same motor, performance with a fast wind/20" wheel is more or less the same as a std wind/26" wheel. The major difference (at least for me) is the...

updating controller with higher amp rating

My 500w Bafang hub motor came with an 18 +/- 1A controller. I upgraded that to a 22 +/- 1A KT square wave controller. I am now looking at a KT sine wave controller rated at 24 +/- 1A. I assume this will be ok since my battery has a 30A BMS. I also have the option of sticking with a KT sine...

    Fast wind motor

Thanks for the responses. I did play around with the simulator before posting this. I found that differences between the std and fast wind can be significant different depending on the motor. I will go back and play with it some more. neptronix, can you explain this statement to the...

    Fast wind motor

It is my understanding that 26” wheels normally use a standard wind motor, but 20” wheels normally take a fast wind motor. I have a Bafang G020 geared hub motor with a standard wind that came off of a 26" wheel. I am using it on smaller 20” wheel, and it seems to work fine. With the smaller...

Problems using a standard wind motor with 20" wheel

I know just enough about the winding of hub motors to be dangerous. It is my understanding that 26” wheels normally use a standard wind motor, but 20” wheels normally take a fast wind motor. The G020 motor seems to work fine with the smaller 20” wheel. With the smaller wheel, the top speed is...

    Noisy geared hub motor

Thanks for the comments, all very informative. Both of my controllers are square wave KT controllers. A sign wave KT controller is more difficult to find and quite a bit more expensive. Would a sign wave controller be that much quieter? Also would the square wave and sign wave controllers be...

    Noisy geared hub motor

I have two trikes, both with Bafang 500w geared hub motors. One has a model G060, and the other has a older CST motor that I purchased used. The 060 is very quiet, and I have no problems with it. The CST motor is noticeably louder. It makes an audible whine when running. This whine gets...

    Best quality budget battery?

I guess there is no such thing as a decent quality moderately priced battery. I may have to rethink even doing this project.

    Best quality budget battery?

I have pretty much settled on this battery from UPP's Amazon store: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09MCW6WPJ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1RAY93OUH65CI&th=1 A few of the reasons are: (1) It uses LG LG 21700 cells. (2) At 19.2Ah, it is slightly larger than my current 17.5Ah battery. (3)...

    Best quality budget battery?

I found the UPP store on both eBay and Amazon. I also found other sellers offering UPP batteries, but I'm not sure I would trust them. I'd rather go right to the source. For $305 I can get a 17.5Ah built with Samsung 3500 cells, or $369 for a 20Ah built with LG 21700 cells. Either would have...

    Best quality budget battery?

It does not have to be Amazon, it's just that I've had good luck with them in the past. I'm looking for a 48v battery. I did find UPP on Amazon. I was concentrating on the batteries they claimed have LG or Samsung cells. They are more expensive, but I do not want something unknown just to...

    Best quality budget battery?

I am adding a rear hub motor and battery to another recumbent trike. The kit I used on the first trike came with a 17.2Ah shark battery. Having learned a lot from the first build, this time I am not using a kit but building it from scratch. This trike will be used for casual rides in a hilly...

Hub drive from 26" wheel to 20" wheel

With 53v in the battery, my top speed is 20.5mph. I can't go much faster than that anyway as that's almost the limit of my top gear. This is more than enough speed for me. Thanks for everyone's help.

Display shows battery full, but it is not

Ah! I remember this now. This happened one time before a long time ago, and recharging the battery resolved it. Thank you amberwolf.

Hub drive from 26" wheel to 20" wheel

Sorry, I never even considered doing that. When I read it, my brain filled in mid drive. Interesting thought though.

Display shows battery full, but it is not

I transferred my existing Bafang/Kt rear hub drive setup from my old trike to my new one and everything was working fine. The only thing I changed was resetting the tire diameter from 26" to 20". The battery had about a 35% charge so I did a short test ride. The display showed one bar in the...

Hub drive from 26" wheel to 20" wheel

I could have explained it better, but generally a wider tire provides a larger overall diameter. A typical 20"x1.0 tire has a smaller diameter than a typical 2.0" wide tire. This of course is tiny compared to the difference between a 26" and a 20" tire.

Hub drive from 26" wheel to 20" wheel

Thank you for the responses, a lot of good information. A few takeaways: 1) I went from a 26x1.75" tire to a 20x2.0" tire. This means going with a slightly larger/wider (20x2.15") tire would increase my speed, but not enough to really matter. Going with a narrower tire would decrease my...

Hub drive from 26" wheel to 20" wheel

So moved my 500w Bafang geared hub motor from my old 26" rear wheels trike to me new 20" rear wheeled trike. I installed everything including the KT display and controller from the old trike on the new one. I changed the speed setting from a 26" to a 20" wheel, and everything works fine. The...

Hub drive from 26" wheel to 20" wheel

I have a Bafang 500w rear hub drive (620 I believe) on my 26" rear wheeled trike. I would like to reuse the hub drive on a 20" rear wheeled trike. I was told that if I do this the motor will have a lower top end speed, but more torque. Using the throttle on the 26" wheel I get a top speed of...

KT Square wave vs sign wave

It sounds like "upgrading" to a sine wave controller would not be worth the cost. Especially since there would not be much if any difference, the sine-wave may not work with my motor, and the square wave one I have works very well.

KT Square wave vs sign wave

Some time back I bought a 500w Bafang geared hub drive kit off Amazon. Not liking the way the controller worked, I replaced the standard Bafang controller with a KT square wave controller (48ZWSRM). It works very well, except it is a little noisier than I would like. I plan to use the same...

    KT display battery level accuracy

I generally charge my battery to full the night before leaving on a ride of 30 miles or so. I can typically get in around 70 miles before I get down to about 45v, so that's about two 30-35 mile rides on my 17.2Ah battery. I know you should not charge it up to full capacity as it is not healthy...
