Re: What generally causes hall failure?

Most motors have cheap Chinese Hall sensors, that are not reliable for heat resistance. After you replace them with Honeywell hall sensors, they will probably last very long because in most situations the fault was not abuse and overheating, only bad luck to have had the defective ones in a batch th...

Re: trike/thule rack/fairing

I haven’t checked the later models, but those that I remember were polycarbonate and much thinner than the usual fiber composites velomobile fairings. Lighter weight of course, but I would guess fragile to impacts and abrasions. Still, they might be much stiffer today, that I don’t know.

Re: The ideal hubmotor

Small motors with gears and chain or clutches will never replace a plain DD hub motor that has true power output. Reduction does not make power, nor speed. It does make torque with lighter weight, at the cost of speed and reliability. The improvements that hub motors need is power density. We need a...

Re: TRAILBLAZER - A Cool Cinematic Electric Scooter Short

I like the photography, landscape and image quality. Very professional. I find it dark and dramatic, emphasized by the choice of soundtrack. The scooter becomes an accessory in a movie that has no story. Personally I would have preferred rhythmic and lively, inspiring the fun of riding the scooter. ...

Re: Securing heavy controller

Depends of the frame, and location where the controller is to be mounted. I like to insulate the controller from the frame, using a sheet of rubber mat and plastic mounts on which I secure the controller with screws, nuts and washers. Yet I have used big nylon zip ties in the past, with a piece of y...

Re: The ideal hubmotor

They are affordable for sure, but they are primitive engineering and cheap Chinese manufacturing. We build fast ebikes with them, and they are reliable because hub motors are simple, but powerful hubs are heavy and that is the main concern for improvements.

If you only need assist, you don’t need high power, for the slow speed that you plan especially. And, with moderate power, your BB drive will be reliable.

Maybe you need to be protected from yourself, if you are so insecure as to believe that someone else not wearing a helmet is a threat to your well being.

There is only one sure way to save your head: don’t crash on your head. That is because the chances are high that someday, a helmet won’t suffice. Those who do crash on their head should avoid riding, or at least do it only in the safest situations. It is a natural propensity that is almost impossib...

Re: Purchasing a bike from Alibaba (12kw, 15kw) Leili

I’d say buy the complete bike first linked to, instead of an Chinese frame alone. Those new frames are much better than the usual Chinese box frames. The Sur-ron was a major improvement, only too small. Now that they make a bigger one, it sure does better and most if all faster. At least you will st...

A disc lock does good, and cutting it would damage the disc enough to make it jam in the caliper.

Re: E-bike Achilles heel?

Plain bikes are stolen much more than ebikes. The bigger risk is the bigger cost, not any extra risk to have it stolen. Yet, if your battery is obviously easy to clip off, better take it with you. Insurance is your solution if you are worried about the financial loss. My insurance did cover a stolen...

Re: Purchasing a bike from Alibaba (12kw, 15kw) Leili

It is true that Chinese frames quality is poor and subjected to almost no quality control. True also that most local ebike builders/sellers are offering Chinese crap at western prices. Someone who is not familiar with bike frames and components can be fooled easily into buying crap, when shopping fo...

Re: controller upgrade questions

Any controller can do for phases, halls, brakes and throttle. Only the connectors need to be replaced to match with many of them. The display is another story because there is no standard. Each manufacturer has his own display for his controllers, so it is better to buy the matching display if you a...

Re: Purchasing a bike from Alibaba (12kw, 15kw) Leili

This bike is a new model. Bigger and faster than a Sur-ron. Few buyers to collect feedback from. Seller might be unreliable. At twice the cost that it is on alibaba, the one that you tried was asking a fair price IMO. That is because he had paid extra cost of shipping and customs, then solved the pr...

. Awareness is your best protection. Awareness sure is your best protection! Also being aware of the road condition. Drivers are dangerous nowadays, because lots of them didn’t drive much last year. I don’t let any of them overtake me, not even coming close to my tail. I ride with the high beam headlights in the daytime, and keep looking all around to spot the idiots. Awareness is your best protection.

Be careful where you start the lacing pattern, you don’t want the spokes to be interfering with the valve. That is a very common mistake with 3 cross lacing.

Since you don’t ride the mountain trails, your front hub quality won’t make any difference. You don’t need the impact resistance of a pro DH hub, and still can use better bearings when they are due for replacement. Hope pro4 are not pro DH hubs despite their name, and are not so much better than Chi...
