Re: CF or Glass Fiber over PVC Pipe

I don’t see how the sleeves would be good for a typical layup method. If u could pull them taut like a Chinese finger trap tight onto the pvc that would be great but I can’t imagine that’s possible with the multiple tubes, otherwise ur laying it on like u would normally which is like paper mache.

Re: CF or Glass Fiber over PVC Pipe

Making a carbon frame is maybe ironically the cheapest and needing the least knowledge and skills method to make a frame. Go for it, ride the resulting frame for a while, and report back whether you still think that. I base that on having found guides to making a diy carbon frame going years back n...

Re: Low Speed, High Torque Hub Motor?

He could do all common components and voltage battery if he rewinds the motor. For sure that’s got to be the best way to get what he wants. Otherwise with the high kv the torque per amp will suck.

Re: Low Speed, High Torque Hub Motor?

U need to rewind a motor for a very low kv to do this as best as possible. Other ways are going to be problematic and perform worse.

I’ll rewind it for u for 100$ including shipping back and vacuuming in winding epoxy.

when they make the frame. the custom pulleys and all other parts are ordered as well. takes time and dont want to screw it up. a lot more expensive and time consuming than just adding a fat hub motor.

Re: CF or Glass Fiber over PVC Pipe

Making a carbon frame is maybe ironically the cheapest and needing the least knowledge and skills method to make a frame. There’s no tools needed other than a basic jig. It’s paper mache essentially. Forget weight savings and still likely cheaper n easier. The next easiest method seems brazing. And ...

Re: CF or Glass Fiber over PVC Pipe

Great idea. How about using foam for the core instead of pvc tubing to be lighter? What are you going to do to orient the metal parts in the frame? I don’t know if their stories are out on the web anymore but they made carbon frames from foam, at least one did and I forget for sure the other. He tri...

Re: at what point is gearing no longer helpful?

Seems like your doing a deep dive into a dream bike that handles well and good weight distro, otherwise I'd say why bother, just choose a bike, slap on a kit, figure out battery placement and have fun . I've read that some people who have purchased an expensive store bought ebike (Specialized) say ...

Re: at what point is gearing no longer helpful?

How will they measure you to build the frame, and the riding position you want if its not in person doing the measuring because they have special gadget you sit on and they measure it all hence custom frame, $540 wouldnt cover the cost of measuring and building the frame. Buy a frame thats close to...

Re: at what point is gearing no longer helpful?

Why do you need a custom frame for this? What about a fixie frame with horizontal slotted dropouts for tensioning the chain? Not that I'm recommending you go 40mph on such a frame (neither a fixie frame nor the one pictured in your post). Is it just to put the motor in the middle of the seat tube? ...

Re: at what point is gearing no longer helpful?

I could get someone to braze the big tube into an old frame but the custom frame is pretty cheap at 540$ shipped and I’ll get rid of all the braze-ons that would be in the way of the battery too. Horizontal dropouts would require a track hub which don't take big cogs. I’ve found a 49 tooth that goes...

Re: at what point is gearing no longer helpful?

getting this frame made.

and will just use the rear derailleur hanger with a pulley wheel to tension the chain and thats fine.

and will get a pulley brazed to the 19 tooth side of the double freewheel (17/19 tooth) to run a belt off the motor going to the cranks

this made things a whole lot easier . seems a not so bad price for then being able to use standard mountain bike rear wheel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWmxxeGn00A or i could buy like 5 chainrings and fit them all on and see what fits and return the others. and replace my chain consistently. i ...

Re: at what point is gearing no longer helpful?

I think that green frame will have pretty bad suspension characteristics from the chain tension pulling on the rear wheel. For minimal suspension effect, you want the chain to pass through the pivot point. Ok thanks you sound like you maybe know about what I’m looking for. I’d like to get as many p...

I’m back to wanting to get a frame like this green one and using the freewheel cranks n going for the biggest gearing I can do with a belt n then the chain. Re: at what point is gearing no longer helpful?

I believe a 16t sprocket can bolt to a 104bcd chainring if I remember correctly. I think you should look at the single speed and left hand drive setups that people are doing with the CYC X1 Pro. Looks awesome. 6:1 gear ratio. The bafang ultra is a huge 18:1 I’m going to save a huge amount of time a...

Re: at what point is gearing no longer helpful?

Places offer many kv for a specific motor and people will chose the one that most suits their application’s gearing..but if your gearing isn’t an obstacle and you can do whatever, there’s going to be an rpm that will be most suited to the amount current you’re putting out. That’s what I’m trying to...

If u want to adjust the timing or frequency or winding ok and it is still copper and iron losses being compared in the end and how much of each is ideal. Re: at what point is gearing no longer helpful?

This question as to what erpm the motor should spin for best efficiency is fundamental in understanding how to run a motor. Re: at what point is gearing no longer helpful?

I’m pretty sure peak efficiency would be at a high enough rpm that the iron losses match the copper. In use moment by moment it will vary of course but overall this is the goal. Hoping someone can confirm this as that’s the whole point in my doing the big gearing w mid-drive using a jackshaft as app...
