Re: Does anyone make "small" 52v batteries?

Needing high power from small ah batteries is what made a lot of us run RC lipo batteries ten years ago. You can get 40 amps from a 5 ah size. Its still a viable solution, but one requiring much more care from the user, because of the fire hazard, and the risk of ruining batteries over charging, or ...

Re: how fast does 1600 watts get you on a mountainbike?

Thats why I keep saying he should at some point, go ahead and put as much as 3000w for 40 mph into that motor, because then he can have a 1600w (measured at the battery output) cruise speed. And the motor should not fry too quick, pulling 1600w on flat ground. But up much hill, that trailer may caus...

Yeah, almost certain that the motor is brushless. But with china, nothing is certain. Could be the product sourced motors made in 2001.

Agree. Don't want to discourage him, other than thinking doing what he wants makes it legal. He reads the law one way, the cop another, and the judge another. Its how the system works. To work that system best, pedal like hell and don't get that ticket. And know it, if some cop hates you. Re the 300...

Again, though it was many years ago, and the first or second year the shimano mid drive system came out, when I demo'ed one at interbike, I was really impressed with the shimano and bosch setups. Didn't like some of the other mid drives as much, but the software for the PAS on the shimano was sweet....

Re: how fast does 1600 watts get you on a mountainbike?

Depends on how much weight is on that trailer. On a regular commuter type bike, upright seating position, with a rider that weighs less than 200 pounds, on flat ground, without a big wind, 1600w can get you to about 35 mph. Depending on the voltage, the winding of the motor, and the size of the moto...

I have a specialized FSR that also had the frame that could not carry a battery in the triangle, as well as an older Y frame giant. The option is pretty much, to carry the battery on a rear rack, but minimize the weight. It can help a lot to add a strut to the seatpost rack, bracing it back to the b...

Re: ok folks here is the hybrid ebike.

Yeah, wattage for 35 mph pulling a 75 pound trailer will be about 3000w. 2000 will do for a relatively lighter bike with just a very large battery aboard. Your motor will do 3000w for short periods of duration, so do go for 72v 40 amps if you feel like it. But again 48 or 52v 40 amps for 2000w is of...

Re: ok folks here is the hybrid ebike.

DC at higher voltages sparks a lot, welding the switch into the closed position. Looked to me like it was on the AC side? I did not say your trailer was unstable at 30 mph. I meant that you may be surprised how it handles at 40 mph. When your bike frame starts flexing like a wet noodle, it makes you...

Re: Help Id this bike - 24v ebike

24v could be early enough to be brushed motor. If only two wires go to the motor, definitely brushed. But some brushed motors did have 4 wires, two fat ones and two skinny ones to a thermistor switch. As for branding, its china. Not a Heinzmann motor, not a Lee Iacoca bike. Lots of those were around...

Re: Are fans needed to cool down battery packs?

Sounds like you got a normal, real world battery situation. Nothing is getting hotter than normal. Do try to park in the shade when it must sit there all day. If you must, prop a piece of cardboard or whatever to keep direct sun off the pack. Every bit helps some. But your battery must live in the r...

Re: ok folks here is the hybrid ebike.

So what state are you in? That a 40 mph home made motorcycle with pedals is legal? Not that cops in many states give a shit. In general, the recipe for 40 mph from that type motor is 72v 40 amps controller. 3000w. So you will not be doing 40 mph for all that long on your battery, even with 1800w max...

Re: Are fans needed to cool down battery packs?

No need for fans. HUGE need for a better or at least larger battery if you are heating them up that much. If you are, your rate of discharge is hammering the battery into dogshit. Whats too hot for lipo? when you can't touch them because the shrink is melting. Quite warm to the touch is ok, though t...

Re: float charging lifepo4

Use a regular charger and bms to balance charge the batteries once back home, periodically. They need this, but if your pattern of use is gentle enough, they may only need it a few times a year. To keep the lifespan, simply discharge back to your voltage choice asap after you balance the batteries. ...

Just mount it so it stays dry, but in a little box so the heat sink can breathe. Or maybe just tuck it under the seat.

Re: What controller for more amps?

Typically, "48v 1000w" kits came with 30 amps controllers. The motors that come with them tolerate this pretty good,, 48v x 30 amps is approximately 1500w. Yes, you can push more into those motors, up to 72v 40 amps. But if you run more than say, 2000w, you can melt a motor down in about 4...

What are the switches going to do? If its crucial, like turning the controller on and off, locate them under the seat of the bike. Or someplace semi dry. Sure, not as convenient to reach, but you won't be using that switch while riding anyway. Non crucial switches can be located in the wet, since if...

The hill won't require a mid drive, on either bike. But a 500w rated rear motor with internal gearing would be a good choice. Invest in some stick on 250 watt labels. The law will only care if you ride like a a--hole. But first, I always say to a real rider,, Don't ruin your favorite bikes with a mo...

Tests to destruction I did ten years ago on similar size motors were powered with 48v 20 amps. The motor can handle that amps fine. It will only pull about 10 amps going 20 mph. Scaling down the amps to the motor won't help a lot, if the rider weighs 350 pounds, and rides up steep hills. No motor ha...

No experience, but as long as the wheel is not too cheap, it should do no damage to the wheel.

You will have to crank down that QR on the front wheel pretty good, to hold the extra weight.

Thats a nice looking torque arm, if it fits your motor tight. Lots of people have wire feed welders, and cheap ones run on regular house current. But the cost of a motor is higher than hiring somebody to put a spot of metal in a cheap ass TA. I'm writing this for the many others that read this, look...
