Re: (Beginner) Long-term battery quality: EM3EV, Grin, EBike.CA, Luna

One thing about going big, is less strain on each cell. Something to remember if you do run more than 1000w.

32 ah running on 700w, with 1200w peaks should last a very very long time. What type of system wattage are you running?

Re: (Beginner) Long-term battery quality: EM3EV, Grin, EBike.CA, Luna

I really liked the Luna wolf battery I got a few years back. It was strong, with low sag under heavy loads. Fully potted, I could charge it out in the rain, using an equally waterproof satiator charger. That alone was really cool. But it did not last as long as it should have. The battery was given ...

Not a bad policy to go with, in any city. Doubly so, if they know you too well.

Re: Looking for a trustworthy front hub motor

I must be confused about spoke count. I thought most non racing bikes, like cruisers and mtb's are 32 spoke. Getting older and stupider day by day. Whatever the common spoke count is for ordinary cheap motors is,, that's the rim you use. Don't get hung up on the rim for no good reason. Just select a...

No, that one was much longer. That one was great, till it got a flat and needed a ride home. No way it could carry on my cars bike rack.

Re: Courier ebike project advice

More info always better, now we know you have a length limit. Is the elevator 2 meters corner to corner? You might have more length that way. My longtail schwinn was built shorter than most longtails, because I wanted to be able to use the bus bike rack, or my own carries by the wheels bike rack. To...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

Exactly. Police enforce the jackass rule. Be a jackass, talk to the police. Jackass can be defined many ways, including being the guy always writing the letter to the editor in the newspaper. But usually its people with drugs on board, or some kind of brain damage that ride ignoring all traffic rule...

Re: Looking for a trustworthy front hub motor

Since you won't be using the crappy rim and spokes that come with them, any of the 1000w 48v kits have a motor you can count on. But don't get hung up on spoke number. Go with what the motor comes with. Should be 32 I think. These are 500w rated DD motors, that can take 1500w with ease, or 3000w for...

Re: Ebike riding with a speaker and lots and lots of lights?

Re the lights,, thats another thing. Light it up, but not blinding anybody. If you ride fast, like 30 mph, you need at least 200 lumens in a tight beam so you can see ahead enough. Nothing wrong with looking like a Christmas decoration, especially this month. So put the rope lights on all you like.

Re: Ebike riding with a speaker and lots and lots of lights?

Riding where its crowded requires you to be patient and courteous. Blasting the music might be good for you, but its not for everybody else. Enjoy the music all you like where its not crowded. By that I mean completely out of any towns. I tried riding normal speeds, like 15-20 mph and ringing a bell...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

Exactly. We don't need more complicated laws. They only confuse, and discourage adoption of light vehicles. The three class e bike law was written by a guy who only wanted to sell e bikes. It has nothing to do with making it easy to comply with it, enforce it, only to allow him to sell a 48v bike le...

Re: Taking steep hills with a hub motor

Others just mentioned it, but I was about to bring up weight. If Ohms-law is slowing to 10 mph, either it IS steep, or its moderately steep and the load on the bike is heavy. Typically, a geared motor such as he has does fine on hills that slow it to 10 mph, if the hill is short enough. So I mean 10...

Re: Courier ebike project advice

Re batteries, the NYC delivery bike riders surely have some kind of place they stash batteries under charge. Definitely can't be a built in battery. To get through a long day, you'd need about 4 kw of batteries. On the longtail I showed, I carried 2 kw in the panniers, using RC lipos. I showed you t...

Re: Taking steep hills with a hub motor

More like 15 mph bro, unless you are riding a 20" motor wheel. Your wattage might be dropping as the motor approaches melt temp. But I doubt that is the cause. At full speed cruise, your wattage should drop a bit, then increase to max as you start the hill. As the load increases, you often do s...

Re: Courier ebike project advice

first of all, congrats on the previous builds. Really good looking, very capable bikes. But a delivery guy will not want the discomfort of a race frame, or the lack of fenders, chain guard, etc. In my opinion, a delivery rider would love my longtail. Just a tiny bit of welding turned a 100 buck schw...

Re: How do you feel about your state's moped laws?

Nothing wrong with good brakes, and mirrors. Even on sub 30 mph bikes. No need for more complicated, more hard to comply with laws though. Turn signals and brake lights,, not so sure anybody sees them on motorcycles, unless at night. And at night, of course a good set of lights is needed. But making...

Re: Optimal Gearing + Cycle Computer Cadence Measuring

What worked good for me, was bigger front rings. But you have to have bikes that fit them. My longtail built from a schwinn cruiser has the cheapo, but sturdy one piece steel crank, with 40 tooth chain ring. But from a vintage schwinn varsity frame, I got a 52 tooth ring that fit it. 52-14 was a goo...

Re: need controller advice please

typically to hit 35 mph, the type motor used in most 48v 1000w kits needs 30-40 amps of 60v. That gets you 35 mph out the door, then slower as the voltage of the battery drops along the way. To get 35 mph out of those DD motors the whole ride, you need 40 mph out the door, using a 40 amps, 72v contr...

Very nice setup for flat.

I have a mile or two of flat near my house, but groceries are down a big hill into town. Climb the hill to the store could work, but it always meant climbing the big steep hill to home, loaded with groceries for me.

Yes. I found while I was commuting, that starting out in 20F weather with a 70 degree battery left me enough performance. Range dropped, and voltage dropped. But I quickly gave up trying to commute if it was any colder than 20F. It just cost me too much range if it was 15F, to make it all 15 miles t...

Re: Building a Trike for elderly father

Yep. its narrower than most delta trikes, so it can tip easier. One of the reasons its speed is limited so slow. But not a limiter that cuts power. Its just a slow wind, in a tiny wheel. So you get a ton of grunt up a hill if you need it. Coasting down a hill way too fast is still possible, so rider...

Yeah, trailforks would not show the 13 or so miles of trail I built on private land expected to go under the bulldozers soon in 2008/2009. Well, for starters 2c is not below freezing water. I'm not sure what temp lithium battery solvents freeze. When we talk about don't charge a frozen battery, we are talking about one taken from a deep freeze storage, or a place where its way below 0c all the time at night, or even in day. But ideally...

Personally, I've had two car fires, and one EV fire. The first car fire when I was 18, the main battery cable sagged till it touched the exhaust. Melted the wiring harness but did not burn the whole truck. More recently, I had the rubber mounts on my differential catch fire on a subaru. I had the wr...
