Re: E-bike Achilles heel?

A disc lock does good, and cutting it would damage the disc enough to make it jam in the caliper. Ya, works well to help the bike from being stolen, but then carrying the bike home after an attempted theft would be major drag. I guess keeping a hex wrench handy to remove the caliper might be part o...

Re: Large Batteries in Bottle Mounts

Tensile strength is pulling while shear is perpendicular to the shaft. They're all related anyway - if I recall shear strength is generally ~60% of the tensile strength. This site lists the various force resistances by size and grade. Even the lowest grade M5 bolt is rated for roughly 900 lbs of te...

Remember! Do not go full temp, will evaporate flux and lead. Follow my previously posted guidelines on solder type, methods and temp. This seems like good info, but I scrolled through a couple of pages and couldn't find your soldering guidance. Which page? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C01xOjGqus...

Re: My econo-e-bike

I know it's halfway through June, but I've been lazy and not riding as much in the last few months, but suddenly the summer heat kicked in here. Time for a few upgrades I've been waiting to do. My original plan was to find a better solution for my lipo packs, and I was really close to pulling the tr...

Re: Giant Trance Belt drive with MESC @ few kW

I normally hang out in the motor technology section, but a number of people have been hankering to see my messy Giant trance. LOL, it's a thing of beauty. I love seeing non-kit builds, the R&D phase, and the fabrication. Plus the 3D printing intrigues me. Something to play with in the future. C...

Hall wire/cable swap question

I was about to order more 10 gauge wire to modify my battery harness to add another lipo pack, when I saw a deal with a set of 5 wires, 5 ft each (black, red, blue, yellow, white) and thought that maybe it's time to upgrade part of my phase wires too. The cheap hub came with pretty thin wires, and q...

Re: Large Batteries in Bottle Mounts

Have you had a failure using just the water bottle mounts before? The shear strength of M5 bolts is high enough I'd assume the weak point is either the bosses or the mount-battery connection. On a Surly (steel frame) with brazed on mounts, especially a touring bike that doesn't see high shock loads...

Re: Help with battery size fitting for a merida big seven

kenl, just out of curiosity, which amp hour version did you go with? 17.0ah on the 35e cells. 14s5p So going back to the 30A question, they were referring to the continuous discharge value the pack could handle and they recommended to stay away from the 14s4p as it could only handle 20a continuous....

Re: E-bike Achilles heel?

Having an electronic lock on your controller that locks your motor from turning and a bike that's too heavy to carry far helps a lot. I like this idea, but I think it needs a controller with that feature? I'm too lazy to lock my bike and don't like carrying a bulky lock. Most of the time, I'm usual...

Yes, i did drive that way, doesn’t matter when the old lady suddenly starts to go into the intersection a few meters in front of you and you just barely have a millisecond to run off the road to avoid her, or any situation like that. Without my full attention and a bit of sixth sense i would be pla...

Re: controller upgrade questions

So 20amps controller to 25amp controller… If you’re only upgrading 5amps you’re not going to get much more acceleration or torque. It might be noticeable but nothing significant that’s why I’m suggesting to go at least 30a. It's all relative, but if you move the slider over on both cases to around ...

Re: Help with battery size fitting for a merida big seven

Just make a lifesize cardboard cutout of the battery profile (to include the mount and attach/detach clearances) and hold it in position on the frame, see if it physically fits. I made one for the same battery. I had to do some scaling in Photoshop to get the dimensions correct so that it would pri...

This "motorcycle with batteries" is for sale locally. It looks like there are 5 SLA batteries, so I'm guessing it's 60V? If the controller were 15A to 20A, then would this be around a 1000W motor? For such a relic, would anything be useful on it? frame, rear motor? It's only $50 ;) I woul...

Glad you're alive and that you were wearing a helmet. Pretty hard to ride a bike or ebike among cars (and idiot car drivers) and have any margin of safety.
