Re: EM3ev - Not what I expected. Help needed.

I think ebikes.ca might be the only company i've bought something from where documentation was sent. We hear complaints about em3ev's customer service being insanely slow to respond every spring. em3ev's products are good and well designed but i hate to hear they didn't take care of you. I suspect y...

Re: Oil cooling a motor with transformer oil/dielectric fluid - the next frontier?

Yes, anything you put in the motor is going to dilute or destroy the grease and turn into a mess. The fluid you put in must be lubricating itself or able to disperse a lubricant. Do you having any testing for materials compatibility on the Redline Likewater? Materials compatibility is a big problem ...

I'm also wondering what this is actually about. YPedal isn't with us as a moderator anymore. Whatever happened 10 years ago is finished business. I was not involved in any of those deals. And you also misunderstand my role here. Also what's your previous username? i doubt a guy who has a 2 year old ...

Re: Disc Brake Conversion

You'd love regenerative braking. I live in rollercoaster like terrain, so i get a huge benefit from it, as well as at stop and go; just like a hybrid car. I would love to have regenerative brakes on both wheels exclusively if possible. It's nice to have a brake which never truly fades in power, nor ...

Re: Oil cooling a motor with transformer oil/dielectric fluid - the next frontier?

I've seen people try to sell the remaining grease in ziplock bag packets on ebay like I've seen with the aviation Mobil 28 grease that people talked about packing their geared motors with. It only came in boxes of tubes, gallon and barrel quantities. If you go to the auto/boat parts store, you can ...

Re: Oil cooling a motor with transformer oil/dielectric fluid - the next frontier?

The current limit of a geared motor is it's ability to shed heat Unless the torque limit of the weakest gear is sooner right?[/quote] Yes, that too. But very often gears can fail for thermal reasons and this would help them. Any motor with white nylon gears uses a nylon formulation with a lower mel...

Re: Disc Brake Conversion

I'd strongly suggest not using any sort of aftermarket disc brake conversion kit, as they're very often mechanically unsound, and in the event of a structural failure, could result in your rear wheel locking up unexpectedly. Since you have a rear direct drive motor.. if your riding is mostly in the ...

Re: Audio recording from internet site

OBS studio can capture desktop audio output even on Windows 10, which has restrictions against doing such. it is a video capture program though so i'm thinking it is not capable of producing audio only. It will produce video files. Some tools may exist to dump audio streams out of mp4/mkv files it c...

Re: Oil cooling a motor with transformer oil/dielectric fluid - the next frontier?

Water? Distilled water isn't a conductive fluid -- as above, it's insulating. My bad on this. But even distilled water does not fit the bill for an environment where you need thermal dissipation and lubrication all in one. Why not? Use marine grease on gears. Why not on mid-drives? Marine grease wo...

Re: Hydrogen Drive - We Made the Battery Obsolete

This is correct - electrolysis was less efficient and if you use natural gas your using power and releasing carbon emissions. There is also a perspective that if you can get hydrogen to $4/kg, it would be equivalent to gas/diesel - if you look at this comparison, we were producing hydrogen at $5/kg...

Don't be too shocked if you can't eliminate a substantial amount of noise, as it's the main drawback to planetary setups - aside from taking up space and weighing more! My Vectrix sounds like a banshee, and lots of people have tried to fix that with their VX-1s, and failed. Protip: noise insulation...

Re: 2 thumbs up for mankind

If you take inflation into account, the price of energy is actually decreasing. Gasoline has been 2-3 bucks a gallon for decades now. it's just that we continue to have higher expectations and want to use increasingly larger amounts of it. Yes, we're going to need exponentially cheaper and denser fu...

There's dozens of technologies and tweaks we could employ to dramatically lower our carbon emissions at a net negative cost. It's not an economics problem, it's a human behavior, priorities, and choice problem. There's tons of very low hanging fruits to pick for lowering our CO2 and other pollutant ...

Re: Oil cooling a motor with transformer oil/dielectric fluid - the next frontier?

Castrol is now in the market with a product that looks an awful lot like it's isoparaffin based, and is using it for battery cooling. This one graph looks much like the viscosity-temperature curve that opticool has, IE a relatively narrow band of viscosity changes from 40C to 100C. 6a00d8341c4fbe53e...

Re: Oil cooling a motor with transformer oil/dielectric fluid - the next frontier?

I would never consider putting a conductive fluid inside a motor. The second you have a miniscule breach in the sealing of your stator and hall board, you have a short. The motor is also inoperable in freezing temperatures.. so you need additives to remedy that. Water would also not work in the gear...

Anyway, what matters most is how you ride, not the power it has. The police are targeting those who behave illegally. I so agree with this. I build my bikes to do 45-50mph minimum but only operate them at that speed whenever necessary ( no bike lane or alternate route and it would be dangerous to g...

Manned space flight is a boondoggle. Unless/until there's unlimited free energy, we have to throw so many resources at it that it can't possibly pay off in any practical way. Indeed, it's an energy breakthrough we need for serious space travel and also inhabiting other planets. Getting to mars itse...

I'd consider using ABS, which can be molded with a heat gun, and also have aluminum or steel bolt thread inserts put into it for a very strong attachment to the bike. As a bonus, it's not conductive. You'll be thankful for that in the event of a crash. The battery support on my car ( Mazda 2 ) is bu...

Re: Any recommendations for a VPN? It might be time

Usually most VPNs are used for leeching torrents ultimately, so i would think that price of the service correlates somewhat well with how much bandwidth you actually get.

I do unfortunately have comcast here ( monopoly ) and am not sure if they interfere with the VPN.. i suspect they do.

Nordvpn works well if ~1mb/sec kinda bandwidths are acceptable.
I don't know of a better one at this time, haven't taken too much time to research myself.
