What is happening with the forum this week?

User 'www.recumbents.com' ( aka warren ) reported this too.

..does it just happen at work? IE not a problem at home?

I'm thinking some folks have DNS servers that are not wanting to resolve this domain name.

Did have a problem a few days ago. Could not connect, sorry did not pay close attention to message as other sites came up fine. Failed at least twice. One time I connected and search seemed extremely slow. Bailed out and waited. By search I mean the quick links.

Cleared up a few hours later.

Error did seem DNS related on total failure, site not found or could not open, something along those lines.

Using the Cast of Com for ISP, with company supplied DNS servers.

warren just chipped in and said he changed his DNS servers to google's and things work fine now.

I have comcast and have to use google / openDNS ( aka 4.2.2.1 / 8.8.8.8 ) otherwise i get issues all over the net..
in fact that is probably why i am not seeing this issue.

I have a round of server administration work to do on ES. During that time, i am going to check out the DNS server settings and see if we can get better results.. that's on my list of to-dos now.

However the issue may just be with your ISP's DNS and there is definitely a limit to what i can do to affect that.

crap, that's a lot of people having problems.

I'll work on it over the weekend. A potential fix is en route.

Have not had a problem with ES but have noticed the Internet in general would slow down. My streaming TV is really buffering a lot something is up. It will hear about it in a week or two.

I'm sorry i have not fixed this yet.. i do not have access to part of the system i need yet.. :/

Bet money it has some thing to do with the Election, maybe some equipment is being overwhelm or DOS.

Global DNS issues have been a thing for a while. I have had DNS issues on comcast that are frustratingly intermittent for over 2 years now.

To everyone else, here is an article about how to use DNS servers other than your ISP's:

I set mine at my router level to cloudflare's DNS servers so that it covers all my devices :thumb:

I assume you are only suggesting this as a temporary workaround till the issue is resolved. As mentioned I use Open DNS and still seeing issues most of the time. People might start giving up on the forum if this goes on any longer.
Hope a fix can be found soon.
Cheers

It is a temporary fix, because i still do not have access to part of the system i need to.
I'm also concerned as you are. It sucks to be powerless to change things at the moment. :x

I looked over out traffic reports and we are not down on traffic thankfully. In fact 2020 has had ~15% more activity than last year.

Anyway, i did an edit on the DNS records of endless-sphere.com for now. Sometimes DNS servers can have corrupt records and an update will clear those records.

Let me know if you see a change on your end due to that. :es:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_server
A name server refers to the server component of the Domain Name System (DNS), one of the two principal namespaces of the Internet. The most important function of DNS servers is the translation (resolution) of human-memorable domain names (example.com) and hostnames into the corresponding numeric Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (93.184.216.34), the second principal name space of the Internet which is used to identify and locate computer systems and resources on the Internet.

Same problem, only way for me to get around is using VPN.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network
A virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network and enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network. Applications running across a VPN may therefore benefit from the functionality, security, and management of the private network. Encryption is a common, although not an inherent, part of a VPN connection.

Re: 07/23/2020 DDOS attack on forum & fix - do you notice any complications?

DDOS = distributed denial-of-service

Well, thanks for fighting off the attack. Much appreciated :)

Everything looks good from here.

OK Marty learns about letters. DNS, ISP, VPN, DOS.

Should I be using VPN if I am sharing movies, music, or programs? Stuff I might get with torrents.

Endless Sphere working fine here. Buffalo NY. Internet service provider is Verizon Fios. Fiber Optic Service. So what's the I for?

Pretty amazing that our hero Neptronix gets this forum to every internet connected computer on planet earth. When people on the other side of the ocean were complaining about not being able to see Endless Sphere, I imagined Neptronix with scuba diving equipment repairing cables on the ocean floor.

Neppy just curious? Would you show us your servers? I show you mine.
