Thread for new battery breakthrough PR releases

They don't get Adam Savage, because they hire me instead to find out for them with precise temperature control fixtures and 7.5digit instrumentation and up to +-2,000Amp cycling.
After checking electrical performance, you must access safety performance behavior.
For this we load them into the thermal runaway calorimeter (one for large cells and one for small cells), induce thermal runaway and observe the total joules of energy, thermal power release rates, gas volumes and gas species.

Business is slammed with work. Many folks want to have wild claims validated before they invest in various battery tech. A lot of snake oil out there, but also a handful of amazing gems.

They don't get Adam Savage, because they hire me instead .....
That is smart for them to have 3rd party verification of their product...
... ( but why ?...dont they have faith in their own test facilities ?..)
And, respected as you are, you do not have the public stature of Savage or his ilk, to introduce and promote new developments to the public.
Actually, in most cases, i would expect you would be constrained from public comment, by client confidentiality anyway.!

The investors are who hire me to validate claims made by other companies. The investors don't have the tools to test, and they don't know what numbers would be good or bad if they did have the equipment. The folks with the lab making the custom cells has the equipment to quantify performance, but they sure don't have the motivation to share honest cell performance; and it's amazing how often my third-party independent testing yields only half the capacity that the lab that makes the cell claims. I'm good friends with Jamie (Adam's old partner on Mythbusters). I bet you that you would quickly find you want Jamie to run any science analysis job, and Adam would make you colorful costumes to wear and tell jokes while you did the work. If you were to ask Jamie to do it though, he tends to directly refer them to me.

The Adam Savage reference was just an example of a channel that would get more useful data on new battery anouncements in the PUBLIC DOMAIN as opposed to it being confined to manufacturers, and 3rd parties such as investor groups.
The point is , we the great unwashed, are left to troll endless internet announcements , Youtube jockies, first user reviews, etc etc...to try to guess which of the endless announcements are genuine or realistic.

The pouch cells being produced (so far) are smaller for testing purposes. One article says that besides EVs these flat pouch cells are also suitable for "2-wheel" electric transportation. Production plant is to be in Massachusetts. Here's a photo of the current size of their pouch cells for further research testing ...

Being that it's a company founded in India the braintrust sees these less expensive cells as not only a viable market for EVs, but also a large market for the millions of electric bikes around the world. Following is a 9 sec video posted on 6/30/22 showing small pouch cells coming off the production line for further inspection and testing ...

New lithium-ion 1865 and 2170 cyclindrical cells are getting too expensive with builders resorting to using salvaged cylindrical cells and flat pouches from outlets like Battery Hookup for their custom DIY ebike battery builds.

IMO, those anxious to buy 4680 cells may not be able to afford them IF or when available for their DIY battery build.

Yes in the Part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WPPBhqeekw&t=213s they estimate nominal capacity ca 26 Ah and energy ca 96 Wh. This was actually expected and it confirms that volumetric density is not better than modern 18650 or 21700 at the cell level.

Btw I have no idea why they just did not measure cell parameters on some 50 USD cell tester before they opened it.

As headline figures, ZapBatt already reports, from its existing battery technology:

Software and hardware extends the cycle life of ZapBatt Lithium Titanate battery systems up to 15,000+ cycles, which equates to 25+ years
Charge time less that 20 minutes, as a result of ZapBatt battery AI, which tracks, analysis, and optimizes 26 different specifications to improve all aspects of battery performance.

Cuberg/northvolt recently produced a li-metal battery that has a very good lifespan..

Achieves 380whrs/kg at a C rate of 0.02, which is a very unrealistic discharge rate.. but should still be in the 350whr/kg range at 1C..
Cycle life? 672 cycles before we hit 80%.

Max charged voltage is also 4.28v.

Very impressive cells... at this density, you could fit 2-2.5kw-hr of battery into a traditional bike frame.. How do i get my hands on some? :bolt:

I read this and find these cells interesting overall... looked at zapbatt's webpage and they had no specs listed.
Checked out Toshiba's page and these cells look like they're maxing out at 90whrs/kg, which is very poor..

Probably a great battery for grid storage though.

Details of Tesla’s latest utility storage system.
Now called the MEGAPACK XL with 3.9 MWh capacity and 1.9 MW power output.
Big change is to CATL LifePo4 cells, with consequent increase in weight and size
Price quoted is us$2.4 million per unit (3.9MWh)
Equivalent to us$615 /kWh !
Or if a 1.0 MW output is specified the price drops to us$1.93m??.. ($500/kWh )

You sound like you care and are conscious of how we impact the the world and 99% of the time that impact is in a bad way,

Tell me do you use natural soaps? Only eat organic 0 processed foods? Because you know that twinky will retard your kids and that deodorant will make you lose your mind by the time your 60

Let's not forget to keep as many lights off in the house to save on electricity....... A little much?, Yeah well so was hearing you b!t$& about what battery gas can do to people, so how about we leave the fear porn to channel 7 because we all can agree that there's plenty of that fear fluffing going on in the world so we don't need to help make more of it

I don't understand your post. ☝️

If your intention is to badmouth LFP, you've picked the wrong place to do it.

We don't suffer fools here and so far you are sounding like one.

While I'm certain that he is not a saint, Luke IS a socially conscience vegetarian who has by his actions proven that he deeply cares for humanity. He also knows more about battery failures than anyone else on this board.

Before you make your 4th post on this forum, please google: Luke Workman battery. That should help you avoid being even more foolish.

Yea, I don't get the reason for this post either. Now to be honest, I have had disagreements with LPF in the past, but not about his knowledge of batteries, or any other e-bike matters in general. He has valid credentials and has built very fast e-bikes.

So now that you have seen some of LPF's credentials, please post some of your own so we know that you know what you are talking about.

And, if you want to know about toxic battery gases from lithium-ion battery fires, start here https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-09784-z

I am sure there are other articles and reports on the subject if you do the research.

I do eat just fruits and vegetables ironically. I don't use any products on my skin.

More importantly, everyday I wake up and go to the RnD lab and do battery safety tests and experiments. Thousands of interesting test results later, I'm happy to tell you I don't understand all the phenomenon inside cells, they regularly humble me and surprise me.

Would not get worked up over the odd post. Grind on.

Energy storage seems to consume most of my thoughts as world events unfold. Need a major break thru. Need to filter sea water, make hydrogen, carbon capture and trap methane.

Need more energy and dispersed evenly.

Funny how saying "eat your vegetables" sets people off. I am guessing they don't know how to cook vegetables.

As a side note, bags of unsalted cashews, walnuts and pistachios, don't last long around here. munch-munch-munch!

However since we have meandered off-topic, here is an interesting update on quantum batteries.

Quantum battery breakthrough paves way for instant recharging
Scientists hope discovery will usher in a new era of ultra-efficient batteries

Anthony Cuthbertson

Researchers have made significant progress towards creating a new type of battery charging technology, which could hold the potential to revolutionise energy storage.

Quantum batteries use the same bizarre properties of quantum mechanics that make next-generation quantum computers possible, though instead of vastly increasing the processing power of computers they could enable instant recharging.

A team comprised of scientists from the Institute of Basic Science in Korea and the University of Insubria in Italy made the breakthrough towards realising this technology by making use of a quantum mechanical system known as the micromaser.

It uses an electromagnetic field to store energy charged through a stream of qubits, while simultaneously protecting against the risk of overcharging.

The researchers described a micromaser as “an excellent model of quantum battery”, and successfully demonstrated that the charging process is faster than classical charging.
Recommended

The South Korean researchers have already calculated that quantum battery technology could reduce the home charging times of electric cars from 10 hours to just three minutes, while supercharger stations could fully recharge a vehicle in just 90 seconds.

In a study published earlier this year, the scientists noted how a quantum battery’s charging time actually decreases as the battery’s size gets bigger.

This is due to a phenomenon known as quantum speedup, which relates to the way the molecules become more entangled as the battery gets bigger.

This allows them to charge collectively as a whole, rather than charge in parallel in the way that classical batteries do.

A fully functioning quantum battery prototype is still a way off, though a proof-of-concept device to charge quantum batteries with lasers has already been demonstrated.

If successful, scientists hope a new era of ultra-efficient batteries will arrive, transforming the way we use everything from smartphones to electric cars.

The latest research was detailed in a study, titled ‘Micromasers as quantum batteries’. published in the scientific journal Quantum Science and Technology.

Hang on Skipper you can hold back the desire to flex behind the safety of your keyboard for just one moment while I explain myself

For starters it's not my 4th post I just can't get my password to reset on my other account so I just made a new one , and I don't have to Google anyone because no extra amount of respect will be extended past the mutual amount that everyone else is given because title or faim means nothing to me so unless someone does something specifically to /for/with me inorder to gain a special amount of respect then they will have to deal with the standard amount of mutual respect because I don't bow or ask anyone for an autograph

I'm not trying to sound like a dick I'm just trying to express that I treat all people the same here that is all.

And secondly I had been up for almost 3 days at the time of that post and looking back at it I am so confused as to why my comment is here because I wrote that for a different topic on a different post so I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why or how the hell I got it mixed up and posted it here? But sleep deprivation is a nasty B I guess

So as hard as it might be just ignore the comment because it wasn't meant for this topic or person .
Thank you and goodnight.

Might I ask, how were we supposed to know you made a mistake?

It doesn't matter to me that you are rude to everybody alike. What I care about is controlling insults on this forum. I took your post to be a insult to a fellow member. :|
