Fuel Cell vehicle....1958. !

In the '60s fuel cells had already been around for 120 years and had likewise progressed little. I guess they just need a bunch of other material and chemical sciences to catch up and work. I guess development for new technologies follows exponential growth from a low base value? There does seem to have been a lot of work in the past decade
 
Yes, equipment and construction cost would be a barrier even today, but i suspect that back in the 60’s the cost of Hydrogen or other feed fuels was prohibitive for any normal applications.....compared to diesel anyway .
Hence no market demand to drive development on a mass scale.
