Curious, is anyone making axial flux motors for ebikes?
Just learned about them this morning and their high torque at low revs would seem to be great for our bikes.

The YASA axial flux motors have been used on a few motorcycles.
Nothing small yet for bicycle use that I know of.
There is an for sale add in the used section for a couple large ones.
Lynch is redeveloping their brushed axial flux into a brushless.

There are a few DIY threads for these; APL has at least a couple of working versions in his thread(s).

Lebowski made at least one, too.

APL's axial motor thread is 61 pages !
A quick peek through a couple pages of the thread is rather interesting ... but ... I don't get the sense a bicycle sized production version came of it.

There was a UK company "Ashwoods" that created a hybrid by adding an Axial Flux motor the the rear axle on Ford Transit vans.
A few hundred were made.
One of the motors and controller was listed on the "used for sale" portion of this site.
Thinking it might be a nice size for a motorcycle conversion I took the gamble and bought it.
Ashwoods company was sold to Dana.
The Dana motor is whats on the Electricmotion motorcycle.

"Well here is another nice mess you have gotten me into."
I had to go digging through the stored stuff boxes.

I have a couple of Axial Flux motors. They are about 30 years old manufactured by Kollmorgen, PMI Technolgies as Platinum Series "ServoDisc DC Motors". Their claim to fame is very high acceleration because the armature is a printed circuit board. The ones that I have are Model 00D12A02100-1 (Type U12D-A). See page 15 of this PDF ...

Years ago I was using one of these to power a Taig MicroLathe. These would be about the right physical size for an E-Bike: 5.5 inches diameter x 2.6 inches deep. Only about 375 watts continuous in a 3 KG package, if I have read the part number correctly. Although they will run up to 6000 RPM ( I think one would need about 20:1 speed reduction). The thing is I do not remember them having much Torque.

Edit Update:
This youtube video shows the construction of this type of motor.

Axial flux motor do make particular sense as a hub motor - a large diameter, yet thin 'pancake'.

Carbon wrapped inrunner makes considerably more sense so far for a middrive.

If it is what it appears to be, the Goldenmotor 5kw shown here in modified form:

is an axial flux.
