I plan to upgrade the FETs of a KT controller. I did some tests trying to desolder the TO-220 FETs of a broken controller both with the soldering iron and the heatgun and I prefer the soldering iron at the moment. However I need high temperatures for both ways.
The FETs I am desoldering don't need to survive it. Important is that the rest of the board will not be damaged.

Soldering the new FETs I plan to do with soldering paste.

Does anybody have experience with (de)soldering TO-220 MOSFETs and what is your favorite technique?

Wick from the back. Pencil iron or other low power iron,. You do not want to burn the trace.

1) Cut the leads flush with the boards.
2) Reflow the solder on the remnants of the leads.
3) Slam the board against a piece of wood. Momentum will carry the lead out and should leave the thru-hole open.
